I play a Mullen SD10 which is a great guitar! I had a problem getting a good tone in the upper side of the neck. Thanks to Tom Bradshaw and Peter Nylund for the help my pickup was way to close to the strings now what a differance!!!!!! Thanks guys Bob Graff

Ok, I'll ask the dumb question. What are the proper clearances for most pickups? Like for a E-66 on a U-12? How critical is the clearance? How close is too close, or too far away?

Critical? No. It's about fine tuning.

As always, thanks to Carter for the great resources.

What should one listen for when adjusting a pickup, other than the obvious change in volume/output level?

That's a real good question. There are documented instances where Lawrence 710's were putting out too hot of a signal were distorting and the fix was to lower the pickup. Pretty obvious. But as to finding the sweet spot......my ears aren't nearly up to the level of a number of players that I know (not false modesty...for real, my ears are not very discerning). I wish I could hear the subtleties that other can. I'm sure that the ideal pickup position involves the balance of overtones etc....I just set them to sound ok and I don't lose sleep.....

I play a Mullen which I know they have their own pickups! But I was told If you put anywhere between 2 to 3 US quarters under the rear side of the pickup (lower stings) and less clearence on the top you can go from there. To me It made the tone much richer as my pickups where to close. Bob Graff

Where are you guys with Tonealigners setting them? I feel they're working best quite close to the strings.

Peter, I have a Tonealigner in my 12 string Carter and I can't get two quarters underneath the strings. It just won't go any lower. It does sound good though through a Steel King with a Black Widow speaker. [or a Nashville 112]

When assembled my custom guitar steel i noticed a little distortion when i was playing so i checked everthing that could be the result for my distorted sound from my patch cord and amp setting ect...and noticed it was the guitar itself so i lowered the pickup about 1/16 of an inch and VOILA! the distortion was gone, i have a BL 710 and now it sit at about the height of 2 quarter and 1/2, so from my experience pickup height was very critical. Very Happy

That's about what my G2 came set at. Not quite 2 $.25's on the bass strings, but close. This thing sings from one end to the other!
