I took Jack Stoner's advice and brought my PC into Best Buy, which is home-base for "The Geek Squad".

After explaining my problem to a very personable and smart Colleen, she opened up the PC, and right off the bat, noticed that I failed to UNPLUG the patch wire from "who-knows-where" to the motherboard. She said, this is probably your problem right here.

Before soundcards were integrated into motherboards, you knew that if you switched a PCI card with another, that there would be this connector that had to be plugged in.

But when MB integrated soundcards came around, I figured that the old patch cord was now integrated, too.

Not so. A stupid thing - hooking up a friggin' cord. Someone shoot me, please.

That's exactly what my problem had been all along.

But - in SB's install instructions, there is no mention or warning to be on the look-out for the patch cord connection.

Like I say, who was to know? They just don't bother to include this, ah, vital piece of info.

So now, I would love to make Audigy my default sound. I also have WMP and Winamp. Winamp presently is the default.

I've been looking all over trying to find out how to, now, make Audigy my default player.

I'm just going around in circles.

Jack, Wiz, anybody at all - please help me here. Before they commit me.

Where's that default button?

Thanks all.

BTW, what a difference with Sound Blaster - I really have missed it.

Chipper Oh Well

I don't know what cord was disconnected but that should have had no affect on installing the sound card. That cord could have been for the front panel headset and mic that was connected to the integrated audio on the motherboard, but it would have no affect on whether the Audigy installed and worked.

As far as SoundBlaster mentioning it in their installation, they have no way of knowing what system it's being installed on, they usually give some general information but they don't have specifics for every PC model.

The SB Audigy is your default "sound card" however, it's not a "media player". What media player you make as your default has nothing to do with the sound card.

OK.

When I put in a CD, Winamp pops up to play it.

I would want Audigy to be the pop-up player.

Maybe cord was the wrong term to use.

There was this cable (a 7-pin connector head) that was plugged into the motherboard. This gal from Geek Squad said to unplug this cable from the MB and connect it to the Audigy card. As it turned out, the Audigy card did not have a corresponding 7-pin receptacle to recieve the cable, but did have a 4-pin receptacle, and was labeled AUX-IN.
There was also a 4-pin receptacle on the MB next to the 7-pin one. I looked around my spare PC parts stuff, and just happened to find a 4-pin cable (on both ends). So I plugged it in to Audigy and the MB.

All I can say is that the PC now recognizes the SB card, but did not, prior to employing this 4-pin cable.

Still would like to know how to turn off Winamp and turn on Audigy as the default CD player. Confused

Chip, are you referring to the Creative Media Player? Your getting confused again. The "Audigy" is NOT a media player the SoundBlaster Audigy is your SOUND CARD.

A media player and a sound card are two separate items.

My mistake again, Jack. I was referring to the Creative Media Player.

Curiously, the Geek Squad lady said it wasn't necessary to disable Realtek in the BIOS.

However, the white speaker icon (volume control) related to Realtek remains and is functional in the taskbar along with the Realtek orange speaker icon, which when right clicked lists: Sound Manager;
Audio Devices; System Sound Events; Windows Media Player; Volume Control; and Sound Recorder.

"What You Hear" is listed under SOUND/RECORDING, but says it is currently unavailable and doesn't show the small scale icon to it's right that is present on many other listed items; when an item is in use that scale icon flickers with green bars showing the device is in use.

Chipk, with the Realtek still enabled, you have two sound cards enabled and they can conflict with each other. The Geek Squad person was more a
Dummy than a Techie and didn't really help. You need to take it to a "Qualified" tech - one that really knows what is going on.

That's the trouble. I don't really know any good qualified techs.

That's why I'm always on COMPUTERS.

First on the Creative Media Source 5 Player.

Click on Start/Default Programs/Set your Default programs. If the Creative Media Source 5 Player is in the list, click on the option to make it the default player. However, you need to be careful with that as the Creative Media player can't play videos. You may want to reconsider that.

There is another option in the Default Programs/Associate a file type or protocol with a program. You can associate the audio file types you want - probably wav and mp3 with the Creative Media Source player and that way the Windows Media Player can still be default for videos, etc.

Personally, I would leave it alone and let Windows Media Player (what I use) or WinAmp as the default. Sort of "if it isn't broke don't fix it" in the file association area.

If the SoundBlaster is working and that's what you have the speakers connected to, disable the Integrated Audio in the BIOS (setup) so it doesn't conflict with the working SoundBlaster.

I realize it may be hard to find a good PC tech, but generally the ones at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc are not what you need.

Thanks Jack, for sticking with me on this.

SB is working great as far as I can tell.

In the CMS GO!, there are two players listed: Creative MediaSource Player and Creative MediaSource 5 Player. The "5" player seems to work better.

I only went to Best Buy because I had to pick someone, and they said if they couldn't get it right, I wouldn't be charged. The gal didn't even charge me to look at and tell me of the cable switcheroo.

I'll leave things as they are. I did, however, go into Device Manager and disabled the 2 Realtek audio high def listings. Everythings OK.

The only thing I found in the BIOS that looked like the MB audio was Azalea Audio (or something beginning with "A"). When I disabled it a while back in BIOS, one of the 2 Realtek audio listings in Device Manager disappeared. But the other remained.

Jack, I'd be glad to pay YOU to get this thing right. Why not? Even if it takes a while. Who cares? I'd rather give you the money, then someone I don't know at all. We could do it via email. I'm not that stupid; just that I get confused with terminology, and that's what throws me off many-a-time.

But either way, thanks for your invaluable input.

BTW - "What You Hear" now shows up within Goldwave; so that makes me smile, too.

I'm sure SB probably will work even better once Realtek is completely isolated, but so far, the sound is super; I'm running through a new pair of Creative Gigaworks T-20 all-in-one speakers, along with an older RCA (RadioShack) sub-woofer.

Not a bad sound at all, now. Very Happy

Chip, I don't want any $$, just glad that I can help a little.

As they say, since it's working, "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Again, thank you Jack.

I went into BIOS just now and went right to PERIPHERALS where the only thing looking like it had to do with the PC's sound was ATI AZALIA AUDIO.

I disabled it.

I'm now listening to Connie Francis's "Everbody's Somebodys Fool". Using Audigy. It sounds just great. At 10:30, I hope my neighbors are digging it as much as I am.

As always, thanks for your undisputed help, Jack.

Cipriano... Very Happy
