Wow, what a great time I had. Last Sunday I attended a steel jam in Kinston, North Carolina in fiddle player Jerry Dunbar's garage. On steel was Kenny Dail, Clyde Mattocks, Glenn Lanning, and myself. We also had Garland Abbott from Virginia on bass and a drummer & lead guitar player who's names I can't remember plus Jerry D. on fiddle & some guest vocalists. Clyde Mattocks is right up there on a level with the big boys and is a pleasure to listen to and steal licks from. What can I say about Kenny Dail? He's got to have the best left hand vibrato in the business and always gets such a sweet tone. He's been one of my long time heroes. Glenn Lanning was a total surprise to me. I hadn't heard Glenn since the MASGA Jam in February and it didn't sound like the same guy. Ol' Glenn jumped right in there with both feet when it came his turn and didn't take a back seat to anyone. I'd never heard him play as aggressively as he did that day. He had a great tone, execution, and confidance I hadn't seen in him before. I've always enjoyed his playing but this was like a new revitalized Glenn who wasn't afraid of anything. After the jam, we had a covered dish dinner with some great food. This was a totally enjoyable afternoon and I'll be glad when we can do this again. Have a good 'un.......Jerry

Jerry, Thanks for the kind words. Being around Kenny and Clyde will make you want to work. Kenny and I have been playing at the Barn every other Friday night for some good relaxed, no "plan ahead" country music. Kenny is a joy to work with! If anybody out there is interested we are doing the thing again this Friday night in LaGrange, NC. We never know who will be playing lead or bass - But there will be 2 steels there (you can count on that!).
Again the Jam at Jerry's was a good time had by all!

Thanks for the "flowers". It was one of the better events. You did a good job yourself. Drummer's name was Tony Wade and Lead guitarist was Mike White. Both guys are active and are "to drawer" as musicians and people.

Mike White huh? I'll remember that! He's one helluva guitarist who picked his butt off. And what's even better, he uses a thumbpick like you're supposed to!!!

Jerry, you're no slouch yourself. I heard you pick at the MASGA jam in Feb. Keep at it!
Clyde and his Super Grit Cowboy Band have been legendary around eastern NC for 30 years. He's a great picker, no doubt... and loves to play. He's been showing up on six-string electric with an up-and-coming group of young pickers known as the Malpass Family. Clyde seems to enjoy passing on his skills to a new generation. He's a really nice guy.
