For those of you interested, here are a couple of links about the Dixie Chicks problem. The first one is a serious exchange between Chet Flippo of CMT and Bill Malone, country music historian.
http://www.cmt.com/news/display/1470798.jhtml

This second one is someones idea of what Natalie should have said. Not that I agree with everything in it, but it's sure food for thought for those with an open mind.
http://thespeciousreport.com/2003_dixiechicks.html

I know b0b doesn't want any political threads where we slam each other, and I agree with him that this is not the appropriate place for that. But these two links are both full of stuff about country music and the country music family. So I'm just posting these FYI and not trying to get a thread started here.

Because these are links of a political nature, in the interest of honesty, I will state where I'm coming from politically. I was opposed to the war before it started because it is a pre-emptive strike with no clear provocation and little international support, it was not declared by Congress as is constitutionally required, and because war is a last resort and this did not appear to be a last resort situation. However, now that we are in the thick of it, I wish our troops a speedy victory and hope they accomplish the task of removing Hussein and his regime forever. Please don't respond to my politics - I'm not trying to get a thread started on that. I'm just stating my politics so you can decide for yourself whether you want to check out these links.

Hope this is okay with you, b0b.

Politics aside, that's an interesting link, thanks David. I'm surprised Chet would print an opposing viewpoint. I' also surprised that more people aren't appalled by the speed and viciousness of the corporate messages about not rocking the boat, and that more folks aren't disturbed about being told what to think. Interesting times we live in.

Nice to see that Natalie holds her fans in such high regard.

Robbie, you're right, that's harsh. But, guys, please understand Natalie didn't really say any of this. It's just somebody with a viewpoint thinkin' out loud what they think Natalie should have said.

Here's an interesting letter to the editor of the Lubbock Avalance Journal (my hometown, also) written by Texas singer/songwriter Terry Allen in support
of the Dixie Chicks. Here's Terry's entire letter:

When I was inducted into the Walk of Fame in Lubbock, I mentioned Frank
Sinatra's comment about Dean Martin. "He was not my brother by blood,
but
my brother by choice." I mentioned this as a parallel to my own
feelings
regarding the Maines Brothers. They ARE my brothers and they ARE my
family.

I have known Natalie Maines and her sister Kim since they were little
girls.
Their folks, Lloyd and Tina are two of my oldest and closest friends.
More
than anyone I know, as a family and as individuals, these four people
exemplify the best of what I believe being raised in Lubbock and being
an
American human is all about.

I've always thought one of the true anchors I have had for my life is my
West Texas upbringing. Ultimately, it has been the bedrock of any
personal
values, faith, sense of fairness, loyalty and morality that I try to
live
by...all with a deep need for personal independence and belief in human
freedom. "This best part" of myself, I think was instilled by the
people
who raised me, my folks, and by the heart of the place I was raised,
Lubbock, Texas, United States of America.

So, I find it an incredible irony and hypocrisy that Natalie Maines, one
of
the great American talents and true full-of-life humans to come out of
Lubbock, is being targeted for speaking her mind...attacked by the very
forces that inspired her courage of heart and taught her to believe in
her
God-given rights to do so. It is a disgrace and it is un-American.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that
we
are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic
and
servile, but is morally treasonable to the American Public."
--Theodore Roosevelt
(President of the United States and a Conservative Republican)

Sincerely,

Terry Allen

I guess you can't have it both ways. She took the opportunity to join in a feeding frenzy, took on the gang mantality and joined in the Bush Whacking. I guess I wonder what she'd have said to a concert crowd in NYC.

People, especially celebrities, should use the "newspaper test" for their actions. They should ask if they'd like to read about themselves and their actions in the newspaper. Natalie now knows the hard truth of that matter.

I'll use the newspaper test and refrain, as requested, from responding to the politics herein.

I have not voiced an opinion and will probably regret this but,,,,,,,,,,,,
The young lady has every right to make any comments she wishes, however, actions have consequences over which none of us have control.
She not only represents herself, but the rest of the members of her band, thier bus. associates and ALL of thier families.
We don't have the ability to shield others from our irresponsible actions.
I think that when people support her rights that they consider the collateral damage that these actions can cause.

Like it or not...she will feel the consequences of her remark regardles of her constitutional rights. What made it so bad was the fact the the UK was doing a dance between the USA and the other countries that didn't support our stand. I dont think any thinking person would have made the remark...especially on foreign soil. I along with the rest of our fighting men will fight to the death to defend her right to say what she wants to...

In the heat of the moment it's easy to say things without thinking, without understanding the repercussions that may come later. It's the old ready, fire, aim. It's the old open mouth, insert foot. It's the old speak from the heart what your brain can't possibly understand.

Natalie, who is obviously uneducated in any serious vain uses the pulpet of stardom to voice a really stupid thought of the moment.

With no education in politics, history and world affairs she takes on an administration full of university degrees and a history of sucesses and combat in the real world.

She is entitled to say what she thinks. She is also entitled to the results of her comments.

No one thought of her as a unlearned person, but she had the right to open her mouth to prove it. And she did.

Every American has the priviledge of speaking out in desent. This includes Natalie.

IF we think back, Natalie has previously expounded her view but maybe not to the extreme of claiming embarrasement of the President being from Texas.

Not all that long ago, she spoke of Toby Keiths patriotic song as being ignorant and sung by a lowlife or something along those lines. So , I would say that Natalie knows exactly what she is saying and cannot hide behind the " I'm young and foolish " badge.

I say, Natalie girl, if this is your position, stand by it..don't waiver. At least I would still be able to respect her for standing up for her right of speech and the passion that goes with it.

She should not back track just to secure her future finances, then she would fall into the Sean Penn catagory of total hypocracy.

If you don't like your Boss, tell him ( or her ) , but if you get fired it's kinda to late to suck up to him ( or her ).

The article above references Limbaugh, and other politicians and that sort for speaking out against President Clinton. Thats what those sort of people do..that is their jobs..thats why people listen to them. that is their INCOME ! they don't sing songs and sell them to people across policial lines. Wallmart is open to everyone, just like Burger King etc...can you imagin if Wallmart or BK posted signs stating a political position in front of every store?

When people stopped coming what would they say.."Come back,. we'll take the signs down " ..... they would never get themselves into that position. Unfortunatly for Natalie, she posted her sign.

I can hear Bill Engvall now talking to Natalie....

"Here's your sign" !!
ok..
thats it for me, my power washer cylinder head cracked and I'm torqued today...

How am I gonna clean my Steel ?

Ya see b0b..I closed with a Steel guitar topic ! Whad'ya make of that ...

Just to clear up a minor point. We do not live in a "democracy", the USA is a "republic". That means to say that the majority does not always rule on every issue.
In the Pledge of Allegiance, we pledge allegiance to "the REPUBLIC". OK?

Did anybody pick up on the disclaimer on the page with her "response" that it was a SATIRE?

Even so, the comment about the disrespect showed Clinton is right on.

Political content aside, one of the artists mentioned in Natalie's fictitious apology was Mike Oldfield. Oldfield's recordings are (is?) probably my single biggest musical influence. He doesn't play steel, and his music is quite different from mine, but anybody who knows my work will instantly see the second they start listening to him, how much his work has shaped and influenced mine.

If one thinks of making a recording as scattering musisal seeds in the wind, I am defeniately one of the plants that sprung from his seeds. I consider him to be nothing less than my musical father.

I think he is absolutely brilliant. I've never met or had any communication with him, but I hope to some day. I'd like him to know the profound effect he has had on me and my recordings.

Freedom of speech is about censorship from the State, not individuals. The government hasn't thrown her in jail have they? How does that guy compare the actions of Iran and Iraq to those of the Maines haters?

If millions of people want to overreact to someone's world view by burning a mountain of CD's they're exercising the same rights she did but he only asserts HER right to dissent and not the rights of the dissenter's dissenters.
