Yep....That is the world famous and legendary Jim Evans,of Texarkana,Tx who came to my rescue that night,I think in late 1977 at the Mid Nite Jamboree.I had spent the week in a local hospital and was not up to playing and Jim covered for me in such a manner that folks all over thought I had greatly improved...and ET was happy and gave Jim many great compliments.Over the years as Jim made the Evans amps we visited with him often and he showed us many steel things...he and Buddy Charleton spent a lot of time together,so Jim already knew our show.He could even fit the costumes,we just did'nt have time for him to dress as he was playing the show just prior to ET's
Pete Finney,you are right about the guitar player
being none other than Pete Mitchell...
I will give a hint on the other 2,as before mentioned, the bass player has a very famous Dad,and he was in the audience that night...
The drummmer also has a very famous Dad who is also a Texas legend....any more guesses??? |

| Hi Pete, When I was in town producing a few recordings for a few waanabes in early 90's, I always made it out to the Palace to hear you play. You never had a bad night. Great pickin' always. One night, my old pal Penn Pennington was running sound for ya'll. Had not seen him in a while. Those were some of the "good old days" that just about stretched me too thin. Have a good one, Jody. |

Jody,
While I appreciate the compliment, I think you may be confusing me with someone else. I only "subbed" at the Nashville Palace a few times back in the day.
At the moment I can't remember who the regular steel players were at the Palace back then (maybe I'll remember after another cup of coffee!). |

I saw ET and this edition of the Troubadours in Ft Lauderdale in around 1979: Rusty Adams – fronting, Lynn Owsley – steel, Pete Mitchell -Guitar, Larry Emmons – Fender bass, Jimmy Heap, Jr. drums. One of the best shows on the road ever.
Pete and Lynn had a great way of playing their turnarounds. I will attempt to chart it using “Crazy Arms” as an example:
(Steel) I I 4 I
(Steel) I I 5 5
(Lead) I I 4 I
(Steel) I 5 I I
When the steel came back in Lynn would play his pickup notes over the last bar of the lead part. On the next song, Pete & Lynn would alternate this with the guitar taking the first and last parts. When either Pete or Lynn came back in strong on the last 4 bars - you knew it. |
