Hi there,

I am a new member here and this is post number one. This is a great forum!

I am learning to play my Sierra Steel through an Evans FET 500 JE that I luckily found locally. This is the model that has the 12" speaker. I think it sounds great, but I have a BW 15" that I want to use in an open-back extension cab powered by the Evans to see what that sounds like next.

My question is, what should the cabinet dimensions be? I have a feeling it doesn't matter a huge amount with an open-back cab but I am wondering what others have done with what success. I was going to play around with the amount of closure in the back of the cab to see how it affected the sound.

I am not concerned with the cab mating up nicely with a head amp or something like that, I really just want it to sound good.

Thanks,
Tim Wilson

I think a 20x20x10.5 cabinet is
good for steel. The two rear panels
can be 5" wide.

I don't want to start an argument
but I would use 3/4" #2 common pine
for the cabinet and 1/2" birch plywood
for the the baffle and rear panels.

A one inch taper on the sides will
give the cab better projection.

Some guys like to use plywood for the
cabinet but I don't.

Good luck

Rick

I built a 15" speaker extension cabinet for the SE-200 Evans Amp that I used to have. It was identical in size to the SE-200 amp (the same size as the Evans extension speaker) and I used 1X12 wood for that.

Hi Rick and Jack.

Both those cabs are about 20"x20" and around 10.5-11.5" deep. That is what I will start with.

Rick - Tapering the sides. I assume you mean so that the front panel has a slight upward tilt?

Thanks for the help,
Tim
