Do any of you use one? I didn't even know they existed until a few years ago. Here's Gene O'Neal with Charley Pride using one:

Jeff Newman used to sell an aluminum "T" shaped
Steel Capo and used it on his recording of "Friends".
Don't know if they are still available or not.
Try a search for Jeffran Music and make enquiry.
Hope this helps.

It doesn't seem to do much for the sound of the instrument.

It would be easy enough to make one. The thing to remember would be to include rollers, otherwise the strings wouldn't return to pitch when you released the pedals.

The capo I got from Newman Music was a circular one which a diameter slightly larger than the height of the strings above the fretboard.

This enables it to allow for pedal movement on the strings.

I must get it out again and have another try at "Friends"

I have been using a Chapstick tube for years, it's great for open tunning on bluegrass stuff... I have used it at the convention a few times, And its amazing the stuff you can do with that little chapstick tube...

Yeah, anything just barely taller than the clearance under the strings, different materials sound different. Neat effect. I've pulled one out on sessions where the producers want "something...uh, different?" Always a hit.

The roller point is a good one. As the contraption is for intermittent use, perhaps a single, all in one roller on a spring loaded capo might work quite efficiently.
