Hey, all of you "electronic" inclined folks, here's one for you. I have a studio set up in my home (built on a concrete slab) and I have been getting a "serious" hum (in the 60 Hz range) coming from my steel pickups. All effects, amps and other gadgets very quiet I was trying to isolate the cause and picked up the guitar to move it so I could check wiring and the hum went away. Just moved ti about 5ft. Now, I have been in electronics for %^&*$ years, have a degree, and I know that there are somethings that just can't be expalined, but this is apuzzler. Chime in wiht your thoughta.

Thanks

Sam if you have single coil pickups and have a computer crt screen on the older monitors not the new flat screens you will get a hum. also florecent can affect the pickups.

Sam, had the same trouble here in the studio and it, as yours, acted as if the guitar was not grounded common with the electronics. Took an eberhardt eraser and cleaned all the sleeves (grounds) of the cable jacks, finished them off with a good alcohol bath and haven't had the problem since. Just a thought. Sometimes I wish we were back in Newfoundland, we didn't even worry about it then, huh? Laughing Laughing

Thanks, Carl, I do have a computer but a flat screen monitor. Fred, I think of those days of good pickin'and would like to go back sometime. Some of my fondest memories are when we played together. I checked all of my connections - this is a "position" problem that makes no sense at all.

I have had that problem with my single coil sho-buds when running thru a matchbox. Doing away with the match box helped but finally gave up on the single coils.

Thanks,. Bo. Guess I'll mount this thing on a little cart, shove it around until the hum stops, sit down and try to play. since that's all I do anyway (try, that is>)

I find this many times is caused by a transformer; light, wall wart, tuner, also the air stream from the HVAC will cause this just like the ceiling fans. Any motor may cause this hum problem. If you move the guitar around to get the loudest hum you can then, start looking around for the cause outside of your guitar and acessories.
Just what I have found with several venues over about 50 years of play and doing sound in many not well wired and insulated bar and clubs.

Thanks, Curtis, for your input. Kind of you to answer. I can live with the hum but it sure would be nice to get rid of it completely, which may not be possible with single-coil pu's

I've had the same thing on occasion and found that simply turning the steel (or the amp) 90 degrees solved the problem- it was the single coil pickup vs the transformer in the amp.
