I read once that it was a flat top Mexican guitar with a homemade pickup on it.

At times he indeed used a flat top Mexican guitar or a Martin with a Volu-Tone pickup and a Volu-Tone amp. He had to prepare for each performance by running a magnet up and down the strings! Dunn later played an electric lap steel with his group, the Vagabonds.
