After enlarging the cavities in front of the changer, I started to install 710s in my Super-Pro. As I was putting the 1st one in I noticed the pickup is snug against the changer side of the cavity. There is clearance on all other sides. It fits, but my question is will this contact pose any audio problems? Should I attempt to further enlarge the cavity on this side so the pickups float untouched to all cavity sides? Thanks, -DJ-

Doug...Sho-Bud guitars require narrow mount pickups. BL 710's were also manufactured in this configuration (I had one installed in my LDG). These come up for sale occasionally and acquiring a set would solve the problem and make further altering the guitar unecessary.

Thanks David for the response. These 710s are the narrow mount. They are just wider than than the stock SB pickups that came in the S-P. -DJ-

Doug....I was surprised to hear that the cavity was too small for a narrow mount pickup. When I installed the 710NM in my '75 LDG it fit perfectly with no modification whatsoever. Sorry I could not have been of more help, best of luck with the install.

Hi Dougie,
I am really surprised the 710's don't fit either, I put a narrow mount 710 in my LDG I had and it fit perfectly, makes me wonder if maybe those 710's could be wide mount, I've never heard of anyone having to dig to make space for them. See you in Oct or Nov sometime, I've been thinking bout calling you lately and haven't gotten around to it, with all my renovations on the house.
See ya my friend
Gene

Thanks for the interest on this. When I first got this steel it had S~B stock single coils. I went to put Geo.L PF-1s in it and had to enlarge the cavity. When I bought it back a few years ago I reinstalled some singles. Now I have 2 L-710 narrow mounts and find I have to enlarge it again (See pic below)! This is one of the early Super-Pros that have the neck selector and tone bypass in between the necks; kinda like the Emmons. I believe I will go ahead with the Dremel and continue to enlarge the cavity. I know how good they sound with 710s and hope to do some session work after they're in. - DJ -

I put a George L in the C6th neck and a BL 710 in the E9th of my Super Pro and had to enlarge both openings. Duane Marrs once told me that the rear stocks were not all the same and not necessarily interchangable without some modification.

Some time back I talked to Becky Lawrence about purchasing a narrow-mount 710 for my Super Pro, and she warned me that it might not fit without enlarging the cavity. I measured the cavity with a caliper and found that it would not.

Apparently we have here, not surprisingly, another example of the inconsistency of Sho-Bud manufacture. I wonder if it's at all consistent for different periods, e.g. maybe the cavities are smaller on Super Pro-era models?

This is really another story and probably does not belong in this thread but......I wanted to get a 712 narrow for my Pro1 12 string and was warned to get measurements first. Sure enough, a BL 12 string pup will not fit in my guitar's cutout even though the original Bud single coil looks like a standard Bud pickup. Although I had thought this to be a Bill Lawrence issue, apparently, with GeoL stories in the mix now, it is a Sho-Bud issue. Hence a warning to all----take measurements. Assume nothing.

So the question remains: Should I further enlarge the cavity so the pickups will float untouched or is it OK to have the pickup snug against the changer side of the cavity?

Doug.........why not just give Bill or Becky Lawrence a call? They're pretty helpful by phone. Bill is a veritable font of information. See you Saturday night.

Great idea Tony. I spoke with Becky and I'll enlarge it some more. OK to close.

I had a similar issue when I tried to install a 12-1 in my Mullen. Even though it was a narrow mount pickup, the edges of the pickup bowed out just a tad and touched the metal neck on both sides. That contact picked up lots of clunks from the pedals bottoming out and even picked up some noise from the changer. I had the pickup cavity enlarged and the noises went away.
