Great harmonies....err...do you s'pose that the proper respect could have been given by removal of the cap?? 
I guess I'm old fashioned but a stint in the military seems to make one have a bit more concern
for decorum than young folks have today.  |

Dan I was thinking the same thing.
A pretty hard one to beat.
Whitney in her prime.
I remember version she did at a
baseball game that was pretty killer too.
What a set of pipes coupled with style.
Always loved Sophie Tuckers version.
Gives tingles. She REALLY meant it.

Steve, take another look. That was recorded LIVE AT THE 2003 SUPER BOWL. No overdubbing, no lip-synching.
Let's stay on the subject of great performances of our national anthem, OK? We can discuss recording techniques on another thread.

Pearl, There is NOTHING WRONG with the Chicks having pre-recorded the National Anthem, and then lip-synching it on the field. Look at how many other groups/singers have done it. The Chicks' harmonies are top-notch, they have NOTHING to apologize for.
PLEASE, Pearl, make sure you read and understand my posts before you make such knee-jerk reactions, OK?
And David Donald---Why don't your posts fill the page? I've always wondered about that. Is it because of some server issues, or do you just prefer them that way? Not trying to start anything, just something I've wondered about for a long time. |

Stephen I haven't heard this version,
but I have heard the Chicks live album,
they really can sing close harmonies well.
If you add the available mixing compression,
chorusing and reverb technology they can bring
in a small road case I have no doubts they can
get their 3 voices to sound studio clean and correct
in a live situation such as a ball park.
Next, yes I write in a less wide formate;
a)
Because I am somewhat dyslexic and have trouble
reading the wider, condensed, paragraphless posts
of others.
b)
AND since it is CLEARLY so easy to be misunderstood here,
I choose to formate in a way I make the least mistakes
in my writings, and can make my corrections the fastest.
Since before you ever see it I have done
2-3 re-writes or edits just to make it look
like I am not 11 years old and illiterate.
Even then things slip by.
c)
I also find I can make my points more clearly if they stand out
from line after line of black on white text.
d)
The forum data entry window on my browser is not terribly wide for some reason,
so it is very difficult to determine wrap-arounds with any accuracy.
So I typically go to one window or 1.5 windows for any lines.
e)
When I am clear and my points are well made,
and even when in opposition, that it is clear
I am NOT being mean spirited, even if I shoot down another's ideas.
I get MUCH fewer ad hominum attacks,
and rebut those few more easily. And so it goes.

| Thanks for the courteous reply, David. I've heard the Chicks live, even before they "made it," and their harmonies were always dead on. But the Super Bowl is broadcast internationally, and so many things can go wrong, the safe route would be to have the girls lip-synch. It's done all the time. People are still arguing about Whitney Houston's version. |

If they did do a lipsync,
it's because somebody with clout ordered them to.
I am SURE they would have preffered to just do it.
Same as most anyone else does at most ANY sports venue.
National anthem, guts alone. Get on with it.

Yes nice job for sure. I image they have several
years of choral work behind them.
I DID know ad hominum decades ago;
took a few years of latin. Hated it too.
Just because you don't use something,
doesn't mean you don't KNOW it.
It was previously used here about 2 years ago,
and resurrected recently. Since it is now clear
to more forumites, I chose to apply it here.
And it goes round again, ad nausium.

These young ladies work with Cami Caldwell, daughter of Don Caldwell the internationally
renowned saxophone player, music producer,
and general supporter of the arts in Lubbock, Texas.
Mr. Caldwell also runs the Cactus theater and
produces and stars in live music and theater
productions.
The Cactus Cuties are the youngest in a
long line of West Texas talent going back to
Bob Wills and including Buddy Holly, Joe Ely
Waylon Jennings, Lloyd Maines, (Yep, i'm braggin
about the home town)
If you are ever in Lubbock you would enjoy
a visit to the cactus theater especially for the
Christmas show.
There is a documentary dvd available from netflix called "Lubbock Lights" that does a
good job telling the story of West Texas music.
It includes several segments with Lloyd Maines
and Mr. Caldwell. |
