The film poster is a cool session shot, with Carol Kaye on a Strat or Fender 6 str. bass.
Wonder what the job was...
Now, The Funk Brothers deserve such a doc over the minimal they have garnered lately. |

true and yet ironic.. as some of the Funk Bros. credited stuff is the wrecking crew, from LA 'off the books' 60s sessions |

copied and pasted from a Bass forum:
I understand that Carol Kaye filed a defamation lawsuit sometime in the last year or so against Allan Slutsky and Bob Lee because they published online information disputing her claim to have played the bass parts on Motown songs such as "Reach Out I'll Be There" (see www.bassland.net/jamerson.html ), otherwise credited to James Jamerson. Anybody know what became of that effort? To me this is somewhat reminiscent of jazz drummer Bernard Purdie's claim to have played many drum parts on Beatles records.

Hey Steve
That case was dropped when Carole's lawyer was presented with the proof we'd obtained that disproved her claims. (Subpoened union contracts, Motown studio logs that contradicted her work logs, signed notarized affidavits from Motown producers, etc.)
The case against Bob Lee was based on his online activities in defence of Jamerson. That suit was also dropped. As for me, I've kept a low profile in regard to the debate. My activities over the last decade in this regard were limited to one post on a site called "The Bottom Line" (which eventually wound up on Bob's "Basslands" site) and a photocopied flyer sent out to a handful of people who had bought the Jamerson book and asked questions about the Kaye/Jamerson controversy.
Carol is a great bass player and I have no desire to see her disgraced. But I'm also James Jamerson's biographer so I have to defend his legacy.Allan "Dr. Licks" Slutsky
Here is Joe Osbornes take on Carols' assertions

As far as the Funk Brothers go, I thought "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" was excellent! _________________ Mark |

I agree, Mark, even tho I havn't seen it all yet, the reveiws were glowing. There could be an even more in depth assesment of the individuals, and they deserve such. |

the whole LA sessions thing is interesting, carole is not the only one from the 'crew' who maintains that they were part of Motown sessions as early as '63.. personally I think an overall doco on a variety of studio bands would be interesting, the Capricorn Rhythm Section, the Dixie Flyers from Critera, The Monument session band and Cinderella Studio crew in Nashville, etc. |

Sorry, but Osbourn has been mistaken himself. I worked a gig one night with Pat Upton who sang "More Today Than Yesterday". I asked him who the bass player was on the track and he told me Max Bennett. I was looking at Joe Osbornes website and he had that song listed as one that HE played bass on. I emailed him and told him what Pat Upton had said and at least he immediately removed the song from his list. That happens when you are trying to remember recording dates from 30 years ago and you have played on hundreds.
The Carol Kaye/Jamerson thing is hilarious. A chick with a pic claiming to play the parts of a brother with a sound like thunder and bass lines like no one of his time....come on. |

It happens to the best of 'em, no doubt.
Jamerson was awesome!
I had a '65 Fender Bass V that had the Jamerson/Motown Sound built in. |
