Topic: open c non pedal tuning. |

hi everyone
I am still new at non pedal steel.
I have been trying to tune to open c tuning and cannot get it to sound right.
I am only able to buy regular guitar strings locally.
Is ther a difference also is a chromatic tuner better than a regular tuner?

You will need a chromatic tuner since the C tuning and many other tunings have notes that's not readable for a regular guitar tuner. In C major - CGCGCE, low to high - the G and E are 'available' on a guitar tuner but the C is not. Hope this helps.

How much difference is there between open c and c6 tuning |

With the standard C6 tuning - one full octave on the 6th string while strings 1 and 2 are the same. The 6th string (C) in the most common C6 voicing is the same as the C on the fourth string in the open-C tuning.
The C6 goes CEGACE low to high, so the intervals between the strings are much smaller than in open-C.

Open "c" is not a steel guitar tuning as is. "C6th" is the one you are looking for. There are minor chords,6th and 9th chords there. Hawaiian, Blues and Western sounds are also there easily available. It all depends on what you are looking for and how much time you are willing to put in to find it 
high to low:
1st=e/.014"
2nd=C/.018
3rd=A/.022
4th=G/.24W
5th=E/.030W
6th=C/.036w |

Yes go with C6 it is much, much stronger than open C
and check out Threadzilla
in the old No Pedlers site.
AKA C6 modal theory site.

Don't let it over whelm you just look
at one small section at a time.
But get through this and you will KNOW
the C6 neck beyond your expectations.
I have been playing jazz for 30+ years,
this opened my eyes on the C6 neck.
My playing went WAY up, and I then did the same
analysis on C6 PSG for ALL the pedals.
Helped there too.
We had this in a FAQ list of the earlier forum,
but it needs to be resurrected on a sticky here.

You might not have tho't of it but.........
You can tune your C6th tuning like thus:
TOP/down
E C A G E C#
This will give you some additional versatility. If you ever listen to JERRY BYRD, he uses it quite affectively on the intro' to his recording of
"Coconut Grove".........and countless other tunes he recorded.

Open C may not be a standard Hawaiian or country tuning but it is still a great tuning nonetheless, especially on Weisenborn-style acoustic instruments.
Case in point - David Lindley. I just saw him play last night and he used the tuning a lot (maybe even tuned down to B). |

Maybe even tuned downed to B is not a C tuning.
What tuning are you specifically talking about? Any tuning tuned to a favorite major chord?
