Papa Nez:
A Loose Slaute To The Work Of Michael Nesmith

Every now and then a disc comes along that blows us away. This is this month's disc that knocked us for a loop. Nineteen of Nesmith's wonderful tunes are given the alt-country treatment they deserve.

You don't have to be a Monkees fan to appreciate how great this tribute disc is. You'll be surprised how many tracks you'll know. The artists pick from his solo and
Monkees career. Those too busy singin' to put anybody down are Sid Griffin, Last Train Home, The Mary Janes, Frog Holler, John Jorgenson, Tom Gillam and more.

Forget what you think you know, grab this disc and get ready to enjoy yourself.

I haven't heard the other cuts on the CD yet (I get my copy at the Iota gig this weekend) but I do know our track "Good Clean Fun" kicks a$$! (modest, ain't he?)

I think we all need to thank Dave...he's one of only three or four guys to even be playing a steel of some sort on this album. That's an outrage, considering Nez's music was defined by the pedal steel....that's what made it so memorable!!! To do a tribute album and pretty much leave steel off all but 3 or four (of 19) tracks is.....well, I just don't like it!

Still, I am ordering the CD. Y'all can hear samples of a few songs on the Dren Records website.... www.drenrecords.com

Dave, I look forward to hearing your work on "Good Clean Fun".....I know you'll have done us proud!

Thanks Joe for the vote of confidence...

I kind of agree that for there to be (relatively) little steel on the cd is not really in the spirit of the original, BUT not everyone who participated in the project has the luxury of having a steel player in their band or among their associates; pulling a comp like this together is a geographically and artistically scattered task- each participant submits their cut which has been independently produced. The fact that there is any cohesiveness to the overall collection is near miraculous.

I got my copy this weekend... there is some fine steel playing by NYC's Jon Graboff on the first cut "You Told Me", blending Straight steel and some cool fuzz lines...

in other cuts there are some lap steel and other slidey things going on.

Hellecaster John Jorgenson nails "You Just May Be The One".

It is indeeda very pleasant retrospective of Nez tunes and good exposure to many young bands keeping the Country rock flame alive...

my only complaint is there is entirely too much b@nj* on the cd for my tastes (even Last Train Home has an overdubbed banjo goin' on in the background )
