Hi Russ, in the discussion about scale exercises a link was made to your 2004 posting 'Brisklick'.
Not that I'll ever be able to get 25% as fast, it will be fun (and frustrating?) trying.
My question is: What type of blocking do you use in that lick? Pick? palm?
To me it definitely sound like palm blocking but of course I can be wrong. Maybe a combination of the 2?

Sorry to be a while answering -
You're right about it being palm blocking.
The way that works for me with this sequence, is
to play it alternating thumb and 2nd finger (thumb on strings 3 then 4, finger on strings 1 then 2).
I hold my hand and fingers in a somewhat rigid stance, so that the distance between the thumb
and finger doesn't appreciably change, and I move the whole hand and forearm 'inward and outward'.
At first, I, too, never thought I'd be able get it going very fast -
Try working on it regularly for several days or a week, then leave it alone for a week or two - then come back to it for a while . . . do this 'off & on' for a period and you'll begin to notice progress.
This process may keep you from getting 'burnt out' from trying too hard all at once. Works for me (usually  )
It's not one to work up in 'a day or two'.

I will certainly take everything you wrote as a lesson in right hand blocking. I will also do the practice routine you described.

I don't have a 'link' to it, I thought maybe you might - I had it posted in the 'Pedal Steel' department,
but as I recall, someone added tabulature and then 'locked it up' because of the tab 
Anyhow, here
is the - - > audio,
and the note sequence is:
1st Measure -
At fret 20, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with the 'F' Knee.
At fret 18, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with the 'F' Knee and the Knee raising the first string a half-tone.
At fret 17, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with no Knee-levers.
At fret 15, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with the 'F' Knee.
2nd Measure -
At fret 13, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with the 'F' Knee and the Knee raising the first string a half-tone.
At fret 12, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with the Knee lowering the second string a half-tone.
At fret 10, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with no Knees.
At fret 8, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with the 'F' Knee.
3rd Measure -
At fret 6, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with the 'F' Knee and the Knee raising the first string a half-tone.
At fret 5, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with no Knees.
At fret 3, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2 with the 'F' Knee.
At fret 1, play strings 3, then 1, then 4 then 2, with the 'F' Knee and the Knee raising the first string a half-tone.
4th Measure -
At fret 1, play string 3. (End)

Thanks so much, Russ. Now picture this: Me sitting in my garage trying for a while, then running inside to re-listen to the audio on the computer! Quite a performance I tell you. The neighbors will think I have jumped off the deep end 
Seriously though, that will do just fine. I will print off the picking sequence and put it in my folder of goodies.

Bent,
Sorry for such a while, but
I only just now found this
diagram that someone had
made up.
Looks like the arrows indicate
the half-tone knee-lever that
raise or lower in the direction
of the arrow.
