One of my all time favourite albums has been re-mixed and is available on CD now.

I must contact Mr Caldwell to see if it is available to overseas buyers. Zane's tone on this album is wonderful and matched by his superlative playing. What a pity Zane is no longer around - he was a great technician. |

Hi Ken
I've got that album as well. It really is tasteful playing across the board. I think the word touch springs to mind, It's a great album. I love the picture on the front with the guitars and amps. My only gripe with it, is the jacket that Zane is wearing on the front cover, woweeee !.

Yes Barry, the clothes are of the times. The amp intrigues me too. The steel guitar is classic ZB tone, albeit non-country. I could never get my ZB's to sound as good as this.
Bobby Caldwell's playing is very sympathetic to what Zane is playing. He is certainly a steel player's guitarist and there aren't too many of them about. |

Hi Ken
The amp between the two ZBs is a Risson. Made in Santa Ana, California and is a two twelve combo converted with a fifteen inch speaker. The model is SSG100, solid state, and were made in the early seventies. They were a highly thought of amp and might have been re-badged for other companies as well.
Cheers

Hi Ken
just another thought, maybe the amp was a part of Tom Brumleys sound in the seventies as a member of the Rick Nelson band.

Tom used mainly Fender amps to record through, and I'm not aware that he used Risson amps in the studio. I remember the catalogue now - Eric Snowball sent me one. There were a spate of lesser known steel guitar amps that came through the UK in the 70's apart from Risson. Randall, Kustom and Carvin were among amps that I tried but I always went back to my trusty Fender Twin with JBL's. I later went over to Peavey amps. The one Risson amp that Eric imported was a bit on the cumbersome side. |

I've just put my order in. It takes me back many years. I was the second player in the UK to buy a ZB. It was 1972 and it was a D10 - blue. Hearing the tone of Zane's guitar took me straight back to that time. I later had a beautiful D10 sunburst that I wish I still had. Just like one that the great Tom Brumley played with the Stone Canyon Band. |

Hi Ken
See 'Question for Tom Brumley' on the forum.
I asked him if he had ever used a Risson in the Stone Canyon Band and He replied and said he had for about two years. They were made by a friend of his and he said they had a fender like tone.
A little bit of steel history uncovered from one my all time favourite players.
My twin 10 from Eric was number 0328, a gorgeous green maple that I believe is now in Indonesia.
Cheers

I saw that post Barry - excellent stuff. Around the mid 70's, one or two guy in the UK were putting it around that ZB's had a bad tone. This led to many chopping in their guitars and going for Emmons or ShoBud. I eventually went over to ShoBud because I liked their tone too, but I also preferred the pedal action over the ZB's. I wish I could lay my hands on my second ZB now though, it was custom made for me by Zane and was a beauty. |
