Bobby Bowman Texas Steel Guitarist

Post by Terry Wood »

Hi Fellow Steelers, I am looking for anyone who might have a good picture of Bobby Bowman Steel Guitarist. He passed away several years ago. Also the Steel Guitar Forum used to have a Steel Guitar CD that he recorded titled "Pure and Simple". Does anyone know where I might get a copy of it? Thanks

What a cool cat Bobby was. That horn he's playing was his "Bugger Red." It was originally built for me in 1978, mostly by Big Ron Lashley personally. It was black, 2" taller than standard and had 9 & 6, no verticals. It was probably the best sounding horn I ever owned. I should have never sold it. Bobby told me it had gone through a few folks before he acquired it and had been in a house fire. He re-mica-d it in red and put his setup on it.

Nice to see a photo of Bobby again. He sure was a great guy !!!

I never knew Bobby but he sure seemed like a great person. I do have one of his Bowman push-pull guitars, best pedal steel I have ever owned as far as play-ability and tone:

Bobby was the brother my parents never gave me. He was my closest friend and Brother in Masonry. He drove 300 miles round trip to be at my Initiation and at my Raising. He taught me everything I know about an Emmons Original guitar. I miss him every day.

Many steel players think of Bobby in those terms. Susan Alcorn and I had many long conversations about what a great person Bobby Bowman was. I hope Bobby and Susan are cutting it up together somewhere nowadays.

In his non-steel persona, his legit name is Jones. He was Bobby Jones until at a gig in Houston around 1952, Herb Remington told him "you play like Billy Bowman." So from then on, he was Bobby Bowman.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

Unfortunately, unlike Herb, I didn’t have such a close relationship with Bobby. However, I consider the few times that I was in Bobby’s presence we developed a friendship, albeit a long-distance one.

Bobby rebuilt and/or adjusted two of my Emmons p/p guitars. One, a D10, I still enjoy playing (this was in 2003 - it still plays like that day Bobby turned back over to me). With both guitars, I travelled to Bobby’s home to drop off and later, to pick up each guitar(a 3-hour drive from my home). Aside from the excellent workmanship he performed on these guitars, Bobby treated me not like a customer, but like a long-time friend. In fact, when I retrieved my D10, it was late in the day and I still had the 3-hour drive ahead of me. Bobby insisted on making a ham sandwich and a bottle of Coke to take on the road back home.

Herb, what a blessing was your friendship with Bobby. I hope retirement is treating you well, and much of your time is consumed with happy fishing trips.

Keep on pickin’
Glenn

Never met Bobby, but one of his instrumentals, "B. Bowman Hop", was among my earliest that I learned. Google it on you tube, it's a wonderful swing number. Great innovator of steel guitar, IMHO... and one of the "greats".
