He Stopped Loving Her Today

Post by Rick Campbell »

Latest from Sneedville, TN. Pete Drake was the steel player on the original with George.

Often regarded as the greatest country song of all time, "He Stopped Lovin Her Today" was a 1980 hit for George Jones. My recording of this song is to pay respect and honor to the song, George Jones, producer Billy Sherrill, songwriters Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman, Columbia Studio B, Epic Records, the engineers, the session players, the other singers, the fans that made this song a hit, and anyone else that had anything to do with it. It's one of my most requested songs. I never get tired of singing it, or listening to it. I took the liberty of adding some effects that simulate the response George got when he performed this song on personal appearances. George and Billy, if you can hear this, I hope you approve of my efforts.

Technical stuff: I use Fender Studio DAW, Presonus io Station 24C, Warm Audio WA73 mic pre, Band In A Box 2026, EZ Drummer, Yamaha PSR-510 keyboard, Audio Technia 4047, Warm Audio WA-84, Quilter Superblock, 1974 Emmons PP steel guitar, Martin D-28, Fender Telecaster, Yamaha BB400 bass guitar, Gaspard Duiffopruggar fiddle, Slate VSX headphone monitoring system, Insta 360 video camera, Movavi Video Editor. Thanks to all of you, your products make this possible.

Wow, I wish I could play 1/4 of those instruments 1/2 as well as Rick does, not to mention the vocals which are great! I really look forward to your videos. Thanks for doing these!

I wondered if/when you'd do this one. Just great. You have the God-given natural voice for this. And the playing is perfect. Bravo.

You really nailed it, Rick – including the recitation backing vocal!!! (Which I believe was originally done my Millie Kirkham, who's also on Elvis's famous laughing live version of Are You Lonesome Tonight).
