Eye candy: near-mint 1960(?) Supro three-legger

Post by Greg Vincent »

Hi folks,

I recently got to take some pics with this
near-mint 1960 (?) Supro three-legger. A buddy up in Seattle is now in possession of this beauty. The former owner was Bobby Ingano, who reports that the original owner bought it new and just left it in his closet. :o
Wanted to share with y’all.
Anyone know the model name?

Model 1466 Airline or S446 Jet Airliner, depending on the year. The colors and pinstripe date it to the '60s.

The Supro Jet Airliner! I have three (two eights, one six) and I am enamored with the short scale and the Supro/Valco/National pickup sound from the late 50's. Their cases could use some TLC.
GFI Expo S-10PE, Sho-Bud 6139, Fender 2x8 Stringmaster, Supro consoles, Dobro. And more.

Does it have a serial number? It may have a small metal tag or a foil sticker on the underside, up by the headstock, with a serial number on it.

Aloha Greg,

I just recently helped Uncle Bobby get a Supro Jet Airliner, as he mentioned having one of those he let go many years ago. It's trippy to actually see a picture of it.

Put a Brass nut on that, and it will sound eerily close to a Frypan!

I had Ryan Rukavina make me a custom brass nut with Uncle Bobby's string gauges, and that thing started ringing like a bell. It literally sounded like it was in Frypan territory! Amazingly affordable mod to get great tone on an affordable steel!

There's a video of Uncle Bobby playing the Supro Jet Airliner 9 months ago in Hawai'i. He plays at the end of the video.

By the way, Toshiyuki Shoji in Japan makes custom carbon fiber legs, which will drastically reduce the weight of the instrument in its case.

I highly recommend them!

Enjoy!
Aloha,

Mike K

Thanks for the input, fellas!

Thank you for the tip, Michael. That’s a cool mod.

Doug, attached is a pic of the serial number. Hope it sheds some light on the background of this instrument.

Greg, your Supro was made between 1965 and early 1968.

According to George Gruhn’s book, a foil sticker with a “1 Prefix” serial number was used from 1965 until early ‘68. Your “1” looks like an “I”, which would make sense because all of the Valco-made guitar & amp serial numbers had a Letter prefix, all the way back to the 1940s. So I think Gruhn’s book mistakenly listed a 1 instead of I.

A foil sticker with a “2 Prefix” was used from early to mid 1968. So my 8-string Supro Jet Airliner was made in 1968… probably one of the last ones to roll off the assembly line. Supro went out of business in 1968.
In 2013 Supro was reborn and started making retro style guitars and amps.

Below is the foil sticker on my 1968 Jet Airliner.

PS I think your guitar is a 1966 (the last two numbers of your serial number).
I know for certain that mine was made in ‘68 (the only year they used a number 2 prefix). And the Last two numbers of my serial number are 68. The last two numbers of your serial number are 66. We know for sure that it was made between 65 and early 68. So I would go with 1966.

The 1- prefix foils were started in 1964 and replaced by the 2- foils in early '68.

The numbers are sequential and do not have the year encoded in them.

If you want to narrow down the date further, check the pot codes.
