I'm beating up my old tweed Fender case so I'm looking into something utilitarian and relatively cheap for my Stringmaster. Its a 58 D8 short scale. I'm just looking for a solid beater.
I've been looking at shotgun cases on the web and they look like they might be an easy way to go.

If anybody has any experience with shotgun cases and steels please let me know.

Thanks, Bob

Bob,
I used a gun case for a lap steel with really good results.

This guitar was much lighter than yours, only 7lbs. I think I got the case for under 50 bucks delivered from ebay. I cut one layer of foam to fit the guitar. I think you'd have to do some similar modification for it to work.

I have my half of a D-8 in a shotgun case and it works fine. It measures 13 inches by 37 inches on the outside. If you used a separate leg pouch it should work fine. I bought the foam rubber online to pad it with. SmileSmile Billy

I use them for two guitars. They work great. The best way to cut\alter the foam is an electric carving knife, works like a charm. Most often they come with foam.

Since your D8 is worth more each day, $225 for a fine custom case made just for your Fender does not seem to unreasonable. BSG Steel Guitars;

You can always just get an old or new - rectanglular Strat/Tele case and re-block it.

I've been looking through this ebay seller's stuff and it looks like he has something I can use. The price is right, that's for sure.
