I just bought a used Regal roundneck which has a strange pickup on it. It's a Barcus/Berry but it's not a contact type. This thing is on top of the guitar next to the end of the neck like you'd put a neck pickup on a jazz guitar. It's about as wide and long as a humbucker but it's only about as thick as a domino or maybe less. It goes to a jack on the bottom edge of the guitar and actually sounds pretty good in the music room. I'm going to take it to a gig tonight and see how it performs on the job. Does anyone know anything about these and have you used one....Thanks, JH

I've used this pick up on my square neck Dobro D60 and it does ok...not as good as an internal ,on the cone spider, pick up in my opinion...But it is easy to install with out dismantling the cone and spider..They are availiable from music suppliers such as Elderly for around $50.00. |

I have the single coil version of that PU on my Hound dog. I think it has a little more natural sound, less "lap-steelish" than the humbucker. I'm quite happy with it, and it wasn't expensive.
The only problem i've experienced is that on the Hound dog the strings are so close to the body so when i fret above the 10th fret they touch the pickup.

Well, I used the guitar last night at a gig and it did a wonderful job. The only problem I had was that I'd put a regular bronze set of Dobro strings on it and the wound strings didn't pick up as loud as the plain ones. I'm going to replace them with steel today and try it again. Maybe this pickup is magnetic and won't pickup the bronze as well.....JH

The barcus berry is a magnetic pick up , and is not balanced for use with bronze strings. I used one to get some bottom while I used a fishman piezo under the biscut for the reso sound on a Dobro dm33.. I really did'nt like putting those steel/nickel strings on a dobro to make the BB work, but it will give a lot more volume than all other reso pick up systems...

Hey, Elf, I'm curious as to why you are using a pickup other than the one that comes on the Hound Dogs? Thanks!

Hey Bob, I also have a Hound Dog that came with a Fishman p/u in the thing. I tried it out with the old pre-amp I had and I couldn't get enough volume to gig with it. I ordered a MacIntyre pickup for it but haven't installed it yet. About a week ago I tried out this new style Fishman pre-amp that I use for my mandolin on the HD and to my surprise the volume went up about 5 times! I'm going to try it at a gig to see how it works. If it does OK I'm going to install the MacIntyre on my Banjo....JH

I guess i'm the Elf
When i bought my "Original Hound dog by Dobro" in 1992 it was refered to as a "low priced Dobro" and didn't have any pickup installed.
The BB is a magnetic pickup so it doesn't work very well with bronze strings.
