Just got home from Harry's gig in Altadena (N. Pasadena) Mike Johnstone made it too. What a rare talent Harry is. Very entertaining on all levels. He played Mohan Veena, 6-string banjo,Guitar, (on his lap and upright), harmonica and of course vocals. Solo show We had a great time. He's playing in Cerritos (so. Cal) tonight. I give it 'two picks' up!!
Rick A. will post pics for me I hope.

Yep - all I can say is WOW! The guy's amazing. He's easily in the same class with Ry Cooder,John Hammond Jr. and Richard Thompson. Harry did 2 solo sets and played a 20 string Mohan Vina which is basically a 7 string acoustic lap steel guitar w/13 sympathetic strings underneath the played strings. He also played a Martin D-35 with the strings jacked up lap style and a 6-string Banjo strung up baritone which he played fretted. Oh yeah he also played a normal guitar on one tune. He has more detail, finesse and bar control than ANY dobro or slide player and he takes the concept of playing in tune to the Nth degree. He plays a unique fingerpicked style that encompasses simultaneous bass lines, funky rhythm chops and real inventive slide lines - all while he sings and plays blues harp on a brace around his neck. He has a fascinating blend of Celtic modal,Indian ragas and Delta blues. This guy is extremely musical. Catch him if you can.

The bass "track" is just part of his fimgerpicking and the kick drum sound is a thick hardwood footrest with a transducer inside it Eq'd to sound like a kick drum when Harry taps his right foot. It's a storebought device called a "Wolftone". Harry said it was made in Austrailia. Yeah that dude had a lot of sound coming off of him. -MJ-

I saw Harry Manx at the Vancouver Folk Festival a while back and it was one of the highlights of the festival. A great musician, indeed.

And that concert link is great!

Harry said during his set and later expounded to me when we chatted after the show that he tunes to DADFAD, DADF#AD and DADF#AC# depending on the tune and then capos from there with a regular Leno dobro capo. He also retuned a couple of the 13 sympathetic strings on his mohan vina for the Van Morrison tune "Crazy Love" to get a Maj7 arpeggio across them which he raked with his pinky fingernail - flamenco style. He retunes in between songs like Jerry Byrd does and like Jerry,he gets it together quickly and efficently. His instruments are very much in tune and he plays very much in tune. No sloppy "blues guy" slide goin on here. -MJ-

When I saw him he also played one song from his latest CD in DADEAD tuning.

The guy gets such a good groove going in every song. Inspiring.
