I see no mention of "the STAR" on that web page. What gives? Are they attempting to keep him a secret? Tell us MORE! |

Jeff, when you're in NYC you really should get together with my friend Jim. I can't remember his last name, but I know that he lives on one of those numbered streets. Just look him up in the phone book.

It's rumored that those were the same words uttered by a Mrs. Bobbit or something like that some years back. |

What a dream maker of a radio show "Hawaii Calls" used to be. I can remember more than one cold night of 40 below zero when our family would gather in front of our old dry cell, battery operated radio and listen to that broadcast. If I recall, it came on on Sunday nights?
Can anyone in here remember the names of musicians and the host of that old show?

Webley Edwards was the host of the Hawaii Calls Radio Show. I don't recall the names of the singers.
Below is the address of a web site that sells 2 CDs of Hawaii Calls Radio Shows.

The musicians on Hawaii Calls changed over time. After all, the show ran for 40 years!
I wish I could be there at Carnegie hall. Gary Aiko is one of my all time favorite singers. He and Alfred Apaka are both in a class by themselves! |

Jeff,
So glad you were able to swing this gig in Carnegie Hall --- really, this is one of the high points of New York City celebrities, you make it here, you're in. If I can make it on Dec 1st, I will be there. In any event, the "Hawaii Calls" cast looks outstanding especially with Jeff Au Hoy on steel. I certainly enjoyed your steel playing in Joliet and will say that your mentor, David Keli'i, has found his well qualified student. Good Luck !! |

Hawai'i Calls was probably the longest running radio show known. It had its start in 1935 when Webley Edwards conceived the idea as short wave radio in those days would announce "This is Australia calling", etc., or as in Hawai'i, "This is Hawai'i calling". It was a standard practice of short wave back in those early days of radio. Webley hit upon the name "Hawai'i Calls" and the rest became history. As I recall, it was Harry Owens and his Royal Hawaiians who were the very first group to be used for the initial shows. Al Kealoha Perry and his Singing Surf Riders very soon replaced the Owens band.
I cannot remember all the great names to come out of Hawai'i Calls over the years, but here are a few to which you can add your recollections: Al Perry, Benny Kalama, Sonny Nicholas, Sonny Kamahele, Jimmy Kaopuiki, John Kamana, David Keli'i, Jules Ah See, Jake Kaleikoa, Tommy Castro, Barney Isaacs, Boyce Rodriques, Danny Stewart, Haunani Kahalewai, Nina Kealiiwahamana (with her sisters Punini and Lani), Alfred Apaka, Pua Almeida, Don Paishon, and Jerry Byrd...my mind draws a blank at this point. When Webley died in the early seventies from cancer, Danny Kaleikini took over as emcee until the show went off the air around 1975. It was resurected again in the eighties under the direction of Bill Bigelow with Nina Kealiiwahamana as the musical director. Casey Olsen and Alan Akaka did stints on the shows during this era, as did Gary Aiko. This latest effort lasted for a few years into the mid-eighties, however legalities forced them to discontinue using the "Hawai'i Calls" name, at which time the show was renamed "Sounds of Aloha". This new name didn't fool diehard Hawai'i Calls fans as the format remained the same until it eventually went off the air due to financial difficulties. What a great history this show has had over the years and what awesome names came out of it ! Jeff now joins the H.C. alumni and what a great choice he is !
