A couple weeks back I lugged the usual tools to a recording session but when I went for my Dobro (D-60 wood body w/ solid headstock) I found the tailpiece had torn on the bass side from the tension of the strings.
I sent it off to Resophonic Outfitters/Beard Guitars in Hagerstown, MD, for repair and a long overdue custom setup (quarterman cone, ebony saddles, bone nut). It came back yesterday sounding louder and brighter than ever with a bell-like tone and tons more sustain. I imagine Beard resophonics are splendid instruments.
Chet Hogue and Paul Beard gave me some information about this particular Dobro - it was made in California at the OMI plant under Gibson auspices but before they moved the operation to Nashville and the quality...changed. I had swapped an MSA for this Dobro, so I'm not the original owner and this was news to me.
Anyway if you're ever in need of resonator guitar parts, accessories, repairs or advice you can't go wrong with Resophonic Outfitters.

Hey Mark...
It's great to hear you're enjoying it. It was a slightly unusual guitar for a Gibson (solid peghead and all).
I played it a bit before Paul packed it up. It's pretty lively!

Guys,
I've got a Beard Mahogany Square neck that I love.Got it a couple of years ago. I would highly recomend one if you can get the $$$ together. It's similar to one Cindy Cashdollar plays in Her Swing instruction DVD. Great DVD for learning G6th tuning by the way.
There doen't seem to be a lot talk up here about
Beard Guitars.. I wonder why

Probobly because there's no controversy like a waiting period that could rival a prison sentence or a price tag that's up in the ionosphere.
Beard is certainly well known for quality without the fanfare.
Paul Beard did an excellent job in restoring my 1929 Tricone some years back and I've enjoyed the few conversations I had with him.
I have not played his guitars and so I cannot speak from personal experience. I would certainly love to try out his Mike Auldridge series.
Actually, I have the Road-0-Phonic, and while it is not to be compared with a full size resophonic, I have gotten much great use out of it for sitting in on informal bar gigs. Oops.. Sorry about the double post.
"Prison sentence".... that's funny....
You should really try one. I paid about 2k for mine new. I heard Sherhorns (sp) are a lot more.
I had trouble even finding square necks to try out in the Seattle area. Everyone that hears my guitar comments on the sound quality and the volume. It puts out a lot of sound. It has a nice balanced sound.
