Hi Ronald:

I play slack key. Just about any guitar will do. Most slack key players play acoustics, and most use steel strings primarily.

I was introduced to slack-key Hawaiian music in the '70s by a girl friend from Hawaii (Japanese sansei from Maui). She considered it the contemporary authentic Hawaiian music, and she had no appreciation of steel guitar, which she considered "tourist" music. As best I can tell, it is simply Hawaiian music played on a finger-fretted open-tuned acoustic guitar ("slack" the keys down to an open tuning). Some of it is more traditional sounding, and some is more modern sounding. It seems to have a big following among Hawaiian young people of all ethnic groups.

Ron - thanks to another thread on this forum, I started wondering about the same thing. Another forumite suggested the beautiful duo CD called Hawaiian Touch by Barney Isaacs (G6 acoustic) lap steel, and George Kuo (slack key); so I got the CD and the CD booklet lists all the slack key tunings of George Kuo on the CD. This has resulted in some great fun with slack tunings on my acoustic guitar. The CD is great - available at: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000030MB/qid=1099538791/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-1216790-5717519?v=glance&s=music
