I've been recruited by the wife of a friend to find a roundneck for her hubby's 50th birthday. He fell in love with my Melobro over the summer, and would like to have a reso. He's a decent, intermediate player with a lot of potential. Paul Beard's upgraded Regal 45 and Gold Tone models all fall within the budget of $800.00. I plan to call Paul to speak with him about these guitars soon. But I thought I'd post here and see if any players have hands-on reviews of these guitars. I know the upgraded Regals get good reviews here, but haven't seen much about the Gold Tone. If anyone has any comments, I'd be most appreciative. I'm also open to other suggestions from experienced players. I haven't checked out resos in this price range in some time, so it's quite possible I could be missing something. Thanks [This message was edited by Geoff Brown on 26 October 2004 at 04:05 PM.] |

Geoff -- I've got a GoldTone/Beard mahogany squareneck, and have been delighted with it. (There was a Beard "R" mahogany in the shop at the time I bought it. The GoldTone held its own next to the Beard, especially when you consider it cost $1500 less.)
There were pretty good threads here and here about the GoldTone/Beard resos. |

I've played the Gold Tone and it's a great value, for sure. Obviously it doesn't sound as refined or look as nice as a $3000 instrument, but I doubt you could do better for that price.

Mucho thanks for the info and links. Doesn't seem to be a downside to these Gold Tone resos, and they are within the budget I have been given to work with. I'll have to see if Gruhn has any in stock that I can check out. Otherwise, I'd be inclined to deal with Paul, as I won't see or hear the guitar before it ships to upstate NY. I know the folks at Beard's will do a nice setup, so it will be ready to play when it arrives. Or, if someone has suggestions for dealers with good reputations and have good prices, I'm all eyes |

Seems like this thread has it pretty well covered.
Gruhn would be a good place to go if he's local. If not...well!

Hi Howard,
It was a pleasure speaking with you today. Thanks for your time. I did go down to Gruhn's and they had a mahogany Standard roundneck. I played it for a while and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was set up well, and had impressive tone. I thought the fit and finish was very nice for a reso in that price range. Big bang for the buck. They put the guitar on hold, I called my friend's wife, and she'll be calling them tomorrow to make the purchase. I think her hubby will be very pleased. I wish I could be there when he unwraps that thing! |
