For you experienced players, this is more than likely a very amateurish question and problem; however, while playing on the upper neck of my steel, I seem to have a terrible problem with hooking my shirt or jacket cuff on the strings of the lower neck. Is it me who is creating this problem and one that most amateurs go through or, is this a problem here that all steel players have to deal with?

Secondly, I am seem to be having a bit of a problem with my wedding band ring coming in contact with the strings, “mostly when sliding the bar up the neck”. Is this also an amateur’s problem that will take care of its self in time?

I've always had that problem.....the long western shirt cuff with half a dozen snaps used to hook on my strings so one would likely see me with the cuff unsnapped and rolled up. Not classly, but it worked.
When we started wearing jackets it was nearly unbearable for ME....but I got used to grabbing the jacket sleeve and jerking it upward until is tightened up some and stayed out of my way.
Others, it never seemed to bother at all.

Well at least I am not the cause of some of these problems in my learning curve. Even some of the pros have the same problem.

How about my wedding band dragging on the strings when sliding up the neck? Is this because of something I am doing wrong? I have tried to lift my ring finger a little higher but that tends to interfere with my blocking.

I quit wearing rings about 30 years ago much to the consternation of my wife. I had my wedding ring melted and a new piece of jewelry for my wife resulted. I also keep my sleeves rolled up. Lastly, my watch band always snagged the closer neck, so I transferred it to my right wrist. Problem solved.

Now that one I like. That idea probably would have never crossed my mind. Thanks George,

regarding your wedding ring......... I've had a narrow band, wide band, narrow band, wide band, etc. etc......but not to worry.

As you get older, your short stubby fingers will get fatter and it simply lifts the ring right off of the strings. Aging is a wonderful process, eh? Problemo....SOLVED!

If you're wearing a long-sleeve shirt and don't want to give the obvious that something is a little different by having your sleeve(s) rolled up half-way, there are two other not so obvious solutions that should help solve the problem. #1. Unbutton the cuff(s) and roll the sleeve(s) just (2)-turns 'inward'. #2. When you button your left-sleeve, button it with the button on the inside of the sleeve so that no button shows. When I play in a long-sleeve shirt, I usually use method #1, if any. I think the ring problem will go away with time. You could also be sitting too low behind the guitar or the guitar may be sitting a little too high. That could solve the watch-problem too! Don't play up hill. Try to sit at a heigth that puts your right-thigh level with the floor when your foot is on your vol/pedal.

Well in those short shirt s,the ladies have seen your arms...
So that's why you ain't married!

I hook a cuff or two also from time to time.
I find a small rubber band
doing a slight twist of the cuff
so the least catchy part rests
over the back neck helps.
