Topic: How many 4 neck Stringmasters? |

Does anybody have any idea how many 4 neck Stringmasters were built? Jody?
I don't know how many of you noticed, but there was one for sale on e-bay and I was the high bidder last night. It looks like it will need some work but they don't come around very often.
This completes my set, I now have a single neck, a double neck, a three neck and a four neck Stringmaster.

Nice going, Erv. If you ever think of splitting the set up I've wanted a single neck in the 26" scale for some time. I thought about bidding on it however I wouldn't have been able to reach the 3rd or 4th neck (stomach problems).

I believe there was a thread years back in which Mr. Carver listed how many Quad Stringmasters were made during the 26" years.
Steven,
Single neck's were only available in 22.5".

What steels did Fender make that were 26" scale (I am a sucker for long scale steels)?

Only Stringmasters from 1953 to mid 1955. These were all two, three, and four necked, eight string guitars, as the Fender Deluxe 8(the single  of that time had the features of a Dual Professional or Custom (Tratezoid PU, 22.5" scale, etc.)
In 1955, the Dual Pro and Custom were discontinued, and the Stringmaster was redesigned with an optional 22.5" or 24.5" scale. The Deluxe 8 was kept on board, but took on the Stringmaster's features (dual blending PU's and such), but only ever had the 22.5" option.
I believe there is a refinished black 26" triple neck with a homemade case on Ebay right now, but I'm not sure. |

I'm not sure what the scale length is on the Quad 8 but just assumed it to be 26". By the looks of the tuner heads and chrome pickup covers it is of similiar vintage as my T-8. Which was built in 5/54 according to the pencil scratchings. My single neck is 221/2" scale and my double neck is 241/2" scale.
The Quad 8 has some funny lettering on it by the fret boards that will have to come off.

Erv,
There is a very easy way to tell the scale length of a Stringmaster just by looking at the fretboard position markers. If there are 4 "dots" past the 24th fret it is a 26" scale. If 3 "dots" then it is a 24.5" scale and 2 "dots" equals 22.5" scale. That quad is a 26" scale.

| Years ago I bought a '53 quad at Norman's Rare Guitars that he had taken in trade, about 15 minutes before I got there. The lead guitar player from Motley Crue had strung up 6 strings on the bottom neck and someone had told him that it looked stupid with all those necks and only 6 strings, so he traded it for something that was made for 6 strings and Norman decided that he didn't need it. |

Thanks for the information. I really like the sound of the long scale. It might be my imagination, but I think there is more sustain with the longer string length.

BTW: I have 1/2 of a 1954 double neck Stringmaster that I am going to put back up on its legs. I have assembled all of the parts and it should prove to be a very interesting guitar. Is a 26" model.[This message was edited by Erv Niehaus on 18 October 2004 at 07:49 AM.] |
