It may not be designed specifically for lap steel, but it sure sounds sweet when you play one through it.
It got a good review in Guitar Player: http://www.guitarplayer.com/archive/0604/0604_BenchTests6.htm

That's a cool, retro looking amp. On the website, Gibson also have some louder versions of this amp. Anyone tried one of those?

I've been using a Gibson "Goldtone-GA-30RVS" since Patricia bought me one for my last birthday (December 2003)

Great on my 1936 Epiphone model "C" , Dickerson, Rickenbacher "Old Ugly" and my Fender 1000...
not so good for country steel though.. I prefer the Nashville 112 for that.

I tried my stringmaster through a GA-15RV and was not impressed. Very microphonic, scratchy sound.

Then again, maybe Fenders are just allergic to Gibson...

Jeff, it is a pretty faithful reissue of the original Les Paul Jr. practice amp of the 1950's. Upgrades include a speaker with more headroom and a solid state rectifier. It's still a one knob amp. I've played both my 1937 National and an early Frypan through it, and it sounds sublime.

I have an original - it's nice. It's a GA-5 and called a 'Skylark'. They called them Les Paul Jr., Skylarks, and ? - basically all the same. I got it with a matching Skylark 6-string lap steel. Both are mint from the 50's. Blond tweedy covered. Paid $500 for both.

The amp needed some work - but sounds really nice. It distorts at higher vol. and gets rather grainy sounding - of course no reverb. But the old speaker is sweet - I think it's a Jensen. (have to look) I'd likely not buy one new for the current prices. Just doesn't hit the monkey nerve for me. Seems way high a price for a limited use amp. I'd put that money towards a Blues Jr. instead. Or just get one off ebay!
