Just joined the forum a couple days ago. I lurked long enough to pick up some tunings and gather info. Thought I'd post and let all of you know I'm happy to be here. I'd been checking out those cheap lap steels in Musician's Friend and was about to place an order (I guess Robert Randolph, Ben Harper and Junior Brown kinda got to me). I've been playing guitar over half my life and am still a hack at best. But anyway I picked up this Vega 6-stringer w/an old Vega amp dated 1946 (possibly a set?) from a local antiques dealer. I've been having fun with it and ordered a new set of strings from this site. I'm not sure the last time these were replaced but it's been a while.
Anyway I'm under no impression that this is the holy grail of steel tone but it sounds nice. In fact I've been playing it through a Boss Metal Zone with just a touch of delay into a Sovtek Tube Midget 50watter w/a two twelve cabinet (really). Just letting all of you know there's new blood out there. I hope this pic works. It's not the best but I'll try to post some outside shots when I get a chance. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/billywade/IM001151.jpg [This message was edited by Wade Jackson on 24 September 2004 at 03:57 PM.] [This message was edited by Wade Jackson on 24 September 2004 at 03:59 PM.] |

Hey, that's a pretty good looking little set-up there. I've always loved how there are so many matching lap steel/amp combinations.
Oh, and welcome, by the way.
Just a thought--you might want to remove the pickup cover/handrest. That way you'll be able to do partial muting and palm blocking a lot easier. It might reduce the visual appeal a bit, but it's an easy, practical thing to do.

Thanks for the hint. For my developing style the cover is getting in the way a bit. |

I've always reserved the term "nice set" for something else. That is a beautiful set. |

I remember a friend of mine, back in the early ’50's; had a black & white steel, similar to that one. I was still rather new to steel at that time, but; I thought it was a good sounding guitar. [Especially when my friend rigged up a reverb, using a curtain-rod, screen-door spring, a recording-cartridge/cutter and a playback cartridge.] It was total-reverb, but; it really sounded great to me! That was the first time I played with ‘reverb’.

Nice gear! Is that really birdseye maple veneer on there? Welcome to the forum. |
