I was reading this thread... http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum2/HTML/005737.html
...with some good stories & photos of classes full of Hawaiian steel guitar students, itinerant steel guitar teachers, etc. It's pretty interesting, but it seems all the formal instruction happened in the '40s and '50s.

I know that it's rare to find a non-pedal steel guitar teacher these days. It seems most new players are self-taught, and learn mostly from books, videos, etc. That's how I learned (thank-you, Jerry Byrd).

Are there still lap steel classes around? (I know Keoki teaches a big group)

I'd love to hear some more stories from people who took (or taught) lessons of any kind.

Dwayne - good question - and I'd like to see a rebirth of that sort of teaching. The 1984 LA Olympics had all sorts of pianos going - maybe it will be lap steel next time around. I was very lucky to study with Maurice Anderson, an incredibly gifted teacher, and he is equally nimble on lap steel, dobro and pedal steel.

Carter steel guitars lists a great group of teachers at this url: http://www.steelguitar.com/resource/teachers.htm

I have this dream that streaming interactive internet music instruction teleseminars will complement forums like this one some day. (Downside - my wonderful wife of 31 years has offered to leave me immediately if that ever happens.) Regards - Bob

Hmm, don't know of any group classes but I do know of one of the rarities...a gifted, dedicated teacher carring on a tradition. No short cut or faking it, it's about learning it right to play it well. He's one of our forum members, my good friend and teacher, Pete Grant. I was extremely fortunate to come across Pete a year and a half ago when I decided to take up lap guitar playing. As most of you know, Pete is well versed in lap steel, reso and his favorite, pedal steel, as well as banjo, harp and pretty much anything with strings!

He is one of the finest teachers I have ever met. Enthusiastic, patient, and always right there in the moment, more than willing to share all he knows. He could be making much more doing studio session work but loves teaching. Lucky for the few of us that have that pleasure. My hat's off to Pete Grant!
