Look what I found...
A 1923 recording of "An Orange Grove In California" by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra.
I've only heard Sol Hoopii's version of this little known Irving Berlin song.
After listening to Whiteman's arrangement it's quite amazing to hear what Sol did with the tune!
Go here and scroll down to find it: http://redhotjazz.com/pwo.html

Wow, that's a fascinating version. Thanks for sharing!
Rounder Records has a page where you can hear Sol's version (requires either Real Player or Windows Media Player) to compare and contrast. It's track 12.

Some 30 years ago, I recorded ORANGE GROVE on an lp. (gawd aweful, I might add). In those days it was very important for the label manufacturer to pay a royalty to the composer. When the label tried to contact the Irving Berlin estate, they seemed to have no knowledge of him ever composing that song. Years later, looking through all my old music, I came across the original sheet music of ORANGE GROVE which does credit Berlin. It doesn't follow the style of Sol Ho'opi'i, more closer to the Paul Whiteman version. It's a great tune which is a natural for the steel guitar. ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/smile.gif) |

Has anybody ever heard a version of this song with the lyrics? The words are a great slice of California-ana (I guess that's my state's version of "Hawaiiana"). |

I haven't heard such a thing, Frank. Do you have some recording of it? I couldn't find the lyrics through a search on Google.
