Maybe I can add something to this. In late 1937 Jerry played for the first time on the Renfro Valley Barn Dance remote broadcast from Dayton, Ohio. This was his audition to play on the Barn Dance. There was a steel player already playing the Barn Dance with a group called the Novelty Aces. Jerry played this remote which was a weekly thing and became a permanent part of the show. In October of 1939 he left our hometown of Lima, Ohio for Renfro Valley and played there for several years. Now I don't know how many recording seesions he may have been on during this time but he was the steeler during this period and may have very well been the one you refer to on the cited records but I don't know that for sure. I would say it probably was a good possibility.
Renfro Valley this year celebrated it's 75th anniversary. Jerry was invited to come to this celebration but it was too much traveling for him. He was told that he was the only surviving musician from that era.[This message was edited by Jack Byrd on 15 August 2004 at 04:45 PM.]
