I have a couple old Renfro Valley 78's and I am wondering if the Steeler was Jerry Byrd. One song was by Roy Davidson and Claude Sweet. It has to be late 30's or early 40's.Was there a Steeler before Jerry?. Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works.

My wonderful filing system has let me down once again. I have that info'.....but can't get my hands on it at this momento.

I don't recall just what the date was that Jerry started there.......but he was the staff steel player and one of our great Forumites actually works there at this time and would certainly know the answer to this question.

Jerry left after high school to that new job assignment, just prior to joining Ernest Tubb, as I can best recall.

How about a copy of those two tunes you mentioned. I'll reciprocate?

Maybe I can add something to this. In late 1937 Jerry played for the first time on the Renfro Valley Barn Dance remote broadcast from Dayton, Ohio. This was his audition to play on the Barn Dance. There was a steel player already playing the Barn Dance with a group called the Novelty Aces. Jerry played this remote which was a weekly thing and became a permanent part of the show. In October of 1939 he left our hometown of Lima, Ohio for Renfro Valley and played there for several years. Now I don't know how many recording seesions he may have been on during this time but he was the steeler during this period and may have very well been the one you refer to on the cited records but I don't know that for sure. I would say it probably was a good possibility.

Renfro Valley this year celebrated it's 75th anniversary. Jerry was invited to come to this celebration but it was too much traveling for him. He was told that he was the only surviving musician from that era.

Just did some quick research on the jerrybyrdfanclub.com site, under Jerry's Life and determined that his first Renfro Valley Barn Dance Show in KENTUCKY was on Nov.4, 1939. He remained there as a staff musician until 1942. Jerry with others, including vocalist Ernie Lee, left for Detroit where they stayed and played until 1944 where upon he next joined the Ernest Tubb contingent in Nashville and the rest is history.
