Travis Style on lap steel....

Does anyone out there play Travis (finger) style on Lap Steel? I do it mostly on Dobro but like to attempt some things on lap steel too. It's amazing what neat sounding licks you can add to an arrangement by doing this. Have a good 'un....JH

I can do a little. If you use the C13 tuning with the low C you can Travis pick rhythm easily. Adding melody is the tricky part! Esp. in keys other than C. But fun to work on. It actually works great as a rhythm backup style in some songs. Shuffle blues, reggae, swing.

Bobbe Seymore has some video instruction tapes that show some of that style.

It's also easy to do in a D or E tuning, which are essentially the same. An alternating bass between strings 6 and 4 add some melody... you got it.

Here's a tune I recorded in 1981 with the "Lost World String Band". It's the old fiddle tune "Angeline The Baker". I used D tuning on a 1931 National Duolian guitar. I fingerpicked it just as I described above.

Roy Thomson and Bobbe Seymour are the two past masters of this style on non-pedal. Bobbe's tape, "A Tribute to Travis" showcases the style about as well as I've heard it done. Roy has done some great Travis-style arrangements for his acoustic 10-string steel. PS - Go Gerald!
