Myself along with Forum Bro Bob Blair let our Alien freak flags fly Alien this past Sat. night as the New Riders of the Purple Sage with none other than Buddy Cage swung through town for a gig in a nice little soft-seater.

Buddy sounded very fine and showed us why he is one of the greats...pics to follow, hopefully later tonite Very Happy

The current NRPS line-up is really strong, and there were great versions of most of the favorites in the course of two long sets. Included nice versions of a couple of Dead tunes - "Friend of the Devil" and "Ripple". Buddy sits on a riser near the front of the stage, and rarely will you see pedal steel showcased as thoroughly and effectively is it was in this show. The audience was spellbound by his beautiful "Raga for Jerry", which he performed at the start of the second set before the rest of the band came out. Buddy was friendly and gracious onstage and off, and it was a pleasure to chat briefly with him after the show.

Fender Quad? It looks HUGE. He is surely deaf on that side. Shocked

Based on the mic placement, that looks more like a Showman or Dual-Showman cabinet with a 15" speaker, to me. I don't see an amp panel on the top.

The volume would depend a lot on what's driving it and what kind of speakers it has. But I bet if you did a poll asking how many pedal steel players use one or more powerful amps with one or more heavy-duty 15" speakers pointed at their heads to do a loud gig, you'd get a lot of "Yes" answers. It's Michael Falzarano on rhythm guitar (erstwhile of Hot Tuna etc.).

As far as the amp goes, I didn't geek out and go stage-side to scope our Buddy's rig, but he for sure used a Boss Tone, and I think the amp is some sort of Fender combo, possibly one of those "Deville" something or other (I initially thought it was just a cab but you can see the glimmer of a jack there in the pic)

Very Happy Very Happy Hey, guys, where's the sound clip; a waste to show us those pics and not be able to hear them; the original group was one of my favorite bands; like in the days of " PANAMA RED". Can anyone give us a clip or two of this up-to-date group.. thanks a million..Bernie Whoa!

here's the review from the paper Very Happy

Quote:
Fans of the New Riders of the Purple Sage were treated to two sets of honky-tonk tunes, hippie outlaw epics and space-cowboy jamming at Festival Place on Saturday night during a concert that didn't end until after midnight.

If the lead vocals don't quite match those when John Dawson and Dave Torbert were on the frontline, David Nelson, Buddy Cage and Michael Falzarano more than made up for that on the instrumental end via superior soloing and wonderful moments of improvisation.

Hitting a determined stride during an extended take of Garden of Eden, which fed into and then back out of the Rolling Stones' The Last Time, Cage and Nelson kept pushing each other by putting new harmonic twists on evolving progressions. The spirit of Jerry Garcia drove the band at times, most notably when Cage started the second set with a solo steel guitar piece titled Raga For Jerry. Not long afterward, Nelson dove into a three-song segment drawn from his days with Garcia's acoustic band that ran Diamond Joe, Friend of the Devil and Sliding Delta Blues together.

The icing came in the form of spirited takes of New Riders anthems like L.A. Cowboy, Louisiana Lady, Portland Woman, Sunday Suzie, Rainbow and Panama Red, as well as a double-barrelled shot of Dylan's Rainy Day Women and the Dead's Ripple for an encore. A memorable night indeed.

Hey, guys, where's the sound clip...

Yes, it would be nothing short of egregious to not have obtained a clip or two Razz

Verily, the people have spoken, and we have heard their plea Cool

here's some of Buddy's ride on "Truck Driving Man"

http://www.telusplanet.net/~gsimmons/tdman.mpg

note: need to get this into a video editor as I shot it in "portrait" on a little 5-yr old Sony digital still camera so as you see Buddy's rotated 90 deg. to the left...but maybe that is somehow fitting Mr. Green

I don't know what that is he is using now. But a couple of years ago he was using an amp head (and several stomp boxes) next to him on the floor (maybe a Dual Showman?) and a custom cabinet with 2x12. At the time he preferred 12s, because they cut through the mix better. But he does like his gadgets, so it wouldn't be surprising if he was using completely different stuff now. As I remember, he is deaf in his right ear, and has his good one toward the speaker.
