I had a good story about my stint with Bill Monroe, etc... in the newspaper. This story is mostly about my bluegrass music. However, I'm working on a new CD that will be ALL country and NO bluegrass. It will be packed full of steel and fiddles, and a little Tele added here and there for flavor.

Rick, I've been working several jobs the last couple of winters with bluegrass singer "Bill Box". Bill was Monroe's guitar picker in the 73/74 era (probably after Joe Stewart).

I'm scheduled to do a country CD project with Bill after the first of the year.

OK, the next time you come to Saluda, we'll play some serious music---I'll play Dobro, and you play fiddle. Hey, it worked for Josh and Kenny, didn't it??
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO MY NEW FRIEND, RICK CAMPBELL!!!!

Thanks for the kind words. The greatest honor that can be bestowed on a fiddle player is to be invited to work with Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. Many of the top country fiddlers have been there, Dale Potter, Buddy Spicher, Vassar Clements, Bobby Hicks, Hoot Hester, Tommy Williams, Tommy Jackson, etc... Bill took Kenny Baker from Don Gibson.

I never heard Bill say anything about steel guitar. The closest thing I could associate was when he said he liked Connie Smith "she's a powerful singer, and she's got the right music to go along with it."

Merry Christmas To All

Rick, that's a great story. I was honored to be invited to sit and pick on Bill's bus with him and Wayne Lewis back in the 70's at a festival out here, and it was a real thrill. Mr. Monroe was as nice as could be, and even let me noodle around with THE mandolin for a bit, which surprised me.

I was a lousy-singing guitar player, so I knew even though he asked for my address and phone number (I think out of pure courtesy) I would never get THAT call!

For me, though, one of my all-time great bluegrass memories.

Jim, was that at the Norco Festival in the early '70s?
I was about 12 or 13 years old, at that festival, and had sat down on a bench next to Mr. Monroe. He was talking to some folks and showing them THE mandolin, someone asked for his autograph, and he handed me THE mandolin to hold. He didn't say a word, just put it in my hands right there, I was in shock.
