I have an old steel album by Reece Anderson called Modern Steel Guitar. It looks to be from the mid-60s and was distributed by MSA. I listened to it again last night and it still sounds fantastic. Reece is a real gem of a player ... then and now.

If I'm not mistaken, this became the first of the "moods of.." LPs. Most (possibly all, I don't remember offhand) of this album was included in the 2 CDs of Reece's earlier work that were released last year.

Russ-
That was the first LP that Reece put out and I got one in 1968 from Reece.
If I remeber he even had a tune of his own tabbed out that was very jazzy that came with the record.
That is the first time I heard a steel recording of "Body and Soul", One of many others that I played in clubs since 1947 on my Gibson Electra-Harp. Key of Db.
It was not from the original "Moods of" which I had all 5 of the original LP's.
I am jazz oriented so especially liked Reece's playing and his style after hearing him and meeting him at Tom Bradshaw's First West Coast Pedal Steel Show in Napa,CA.
I also become a good friend of his subsequently. He has been and still is tops in my Book. I am glad he finally got inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. He earned it....al

Yes that is the album (blue cover). I don't remember where I got it from but it is very much Jazz. I've had it about 30 years. Tom Morrell plays "Groovy Trombone" on it.

Tommy, only 100 of each volume were initially pressed. b0b and Reece may have a few left of each one, and Reece said something about doing another pressing once these are sold out.
My personal opinion is that volume 2, which, in addition to the material from the "moods of" series, alco contain the 2 live cuts from the 1979 convention LP and 8 tunes from the "Universal Steel Man" Lp that was only released in Europe, is the better of the 2.

Volume 3 (vinyl record), Moods of Maurice Anderson, "Big D Spree" has got to be one of the coolest jazz tunes ever recorded on steel. Maurice is one great steel picker and was ahead of the game back then!!

John-That's the one that Reece wrote and tabbed. I couldnt remember the name, thanks. "Big D Spree". That was on his 1st album, Russ is that right. ? that was alomost 40 years ago. Yes, I'd say he was ahead of his time...al

Those are the same songs as volume one of the "Moods Of...' series, and they all were included on the CD.
Now that the first pressing has sold out, I hope Reece makes more of them.

| I have to say this everytime this topic comes up. Reese Andersons' recording of "I'm Old Fashioned" on this CD is one of the finest things you will ever hear played on a pedal guitar. The tone, the phrasing, the ideas still sound great 40 years later. Just steel, upright bass, and drums. Classic!! |
