Thanks Jack, that's some great stuff right there. You know, I tweeked that guitar in for Russ right before the day Norm came and picked it up. I was there to see the big smile on Norm's face when he first seen it.
Danny Sneed was there and I think Mike Stewart was there as well.

I've still got my S-11 RusLer, with 5&4, from 1977. It still looks and plays as great, as when I first got it. I don't think I'll ever sell it. It was my first pro steel, and if it could only talk.

I had a S12 beautiful Rus-Ler with 10 pedals and 7 knee levers. Picture on my Website.
The metal ws all scrolled, etc, just a beauty, built heavy and pulling system similar to an MSA. It sounded great through my Dual Showman with JBL"s.I knew Russ Russell (may he rest in peace)and have been over to his house a few times when I lived in Phoenix. He was quite a guy...al

Fred..wish I coulda been there..as you know mine has pinstriping on it like Norm's..in fact the fella that striped all those is a good friend and the day that I get my Desert Rose D-10 it's going right to his house to get striped...just gotta do it.

Fred could give more of a history of the Rusler than I can...I got a call from Jeff Newman back in the mid 80's he wanted to trade his Rusler for a Tele...I asked him if it was a good steel and he said, "When you get it you'll like it more than your Sho-Bud." He was right I sold the Sho-Bud after getting the Rusler.
(Now, I wish I'd have kept them both.)

On the cover of the "E-9th Pedal Steel Workbook" by John Bidasio there is pictured a Rusler D-10 with pinstriping, would that be the guitar that belonged to Norm Hamlet?

Hey Jack,
I still have my Lime Green Rus-Ler it is a double 11 e9th and 10 c6th. It is still a great sounding guitar and the first one I ever saw that had ball bearing rollers. I never had problems with the strings not coming back in tune.
I don`t know how many guitars Russ built but I bet any one that has one will not get rid of it.
I don`t know if my guitar was on the front of that brochure or not because I don`t know if there was another one built with the same color as mine. Possibly Fred might know.
Russ had a lot of ideas about building steels and if his life had been longer I am sure we would have seen some interesting things being built by him.
Norm.

Somewhere in my files I've got a bunch of photos of Rusler guitars that Lynn Woolbridge... owner of Lynn's String Shop in New Mexico... sent me. Pretty darn fancy guitars. I understand they were quite good sounding, and quite heavy. Like a ZB.

Norm-I agree with you on that. I loved my Rus-ler that Russell built for me, a S12 with 10 pedals and 7 knee levers, it got too heavy for me to take out on the job anymore and that is why I sold it. The Bell cranks and brass rod holders, etc, were all bigger than the MSA parts. It was overbuilt, had a good sound and stayed in tune real well.

Got a good price for it too. Made a younger steel player very happy....al

Norm

Thanx for your input about your Rusler... they were built like a tank.. and were about as heavy. Like you, I won't get rid of mine either. I'd bet your Rusler could sure tell some stories.

I had a new knee lever added to mine by Chuck Back of Desert Rose Steels.. he has the old parts made by Russ. Can't wait 'til I get my new Desert Rose so my Rusler won't be lonely.

Jack

I had a guy playing for me back in the 80's that played a white Russler. His name was Chuck Mooney. Anyone ever run onto him or knew him? He carried it in the trunk of his car and never had a case for it. Good sounding steel. Last I heard, he was in New Mexico somewhere.
