Got to thinking after looking at the "Name on Instrument" thread... why do so many of us have nicknames? Buddy, Smiley, Speedy, Sonny, Rusty, Woody, Curly, Big whoever, Tiny whoever... just wondering...
And... just how many different ones are there, anyway?

well mine started out a few years back when i lived in tennessee. i had to retire early at the age of 51, i didn't have much to do so i took up gun smithing. well they started calling me the gun doctor. then i saw tombstone with val kalmer. awesome movie. there was never a more cool person to play that part than him. i was a member of the "single action shooting society" and my alias is "doc penton" and the name doc just kinda stuck with me after that. i support 2 45lc with pearl grips a 45 lc yellow boy lever action and a 12 ga stage coach shotgun with reversed triggers for speed shooting. i also ride a awesome V8 trike and a lot of people know me as "doc"
then i lost my mind and took up the pedal steel guitar and have not been the same sence. ha ha ha

In junior high and high school I had the nickname of "Blinky". I'm glad those days are gone, however that low life dog "Sleepy John" (John Floyd) still calls me that........JH in Va.

Jerry... I'm from Norfolk, originally. My sister went to St. Paul's. We moved here to Nashville before I got to high school. My Dad opened WCMS in 1954...

Howdy Micky D....I use to live in Portsmouth back in the 58-63 years,,and i remember "WCMS",didn't the jingle go,,"It's the modern country station W C M S"?,Im trying to remember the D J's name at that time,but can't think of it..my bro -played Steel in a band up there in those days,i still remember a statement that the D J made one day as we was listning,he said,,"that the Louvin Brothers, ( after playing one of their songs )had the truest harmony of any duet he ever heard,and I think my bro called in and told him he would never say truer words lol....

Wow, Tom... I'm from Portsmouth, really, but nobody knows where that is, so I just say Norfolk. Even though all us locals know the Norfolk Naval Shipyard is REALLY in Portsmouth.
My Dad's on air name was "Sheriff" Tex Davis. Some of the other guys were "Hopalong" Joe Hoppel, "Carolina" Charlie Wiggins... there was another guy, I'm drawing a blank...

I hated my name of "Freddy Gene". given to me by my mother and my three older sisters.
So, when I became "of age" and joined the musicians union, I took advantage of the option to list an professional name...which I decided was "Gene Jones"....and I have used it ever since for about 58 years.

Tom, they shut it down in '03; one year before ol' Joe got to celebrate 50 years. Stupid management. I think the competition bought them, and re-programmed them right out of the market. They were all sports for a short while. I believe they've been somewhat resurrected... you can check 'em out at:

I got my nickname "Turbo" from a long time friend Paul Mateki from Texas with whom I have been playing more times - why??? - perhabs it was more easy for him to remember Turbo instead of Torben ???? - Paul is a great intertainer and singer.

regarding Jimbeaux, it's a funny thing because when I was a little kid, my parents used to call me 'Jimbo'. Well, I never saw it in print, of course, they would just call me that, so I don't know how it was supposedly spelled at the time; I just assume it was 'Jimbo'. That name probably stuck until the time I was in High School (when I got called all kinds of other names ), and little 'Jimbo' was all but forgotten.
Fast forward a few decades to the Steel Guitar Forum, round about 2001 or so when Keyboardist Extraordinaire and Forumite, Roy Rosetta decided, in his own inimitable way, to resurrect something he never knew existed in the first place, and started referring to me in the Cajun vernacular, as 'Jimbeaux'. So I'm probably the only Jewish Cajun alive!
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! |

| Well my dad was a Hank Williams fan and since they called him Luke The Drifter thats' where my dad came up with my first name. When I got a cb radio, I took the cb handle of Luke The Drifter. Now some people around town here just call me Drifter when they see me. |

My real name is Sonny. The nickname sonbone is a derivation of mudbone...a Richard Pryor character...given to me by another musician for my love of playing blues.
