Hello all. I wanted to introduce myself. I've been following the forum for a while now. I've been drumming (part time professional and Sunday praise) for 30+ years and now learning psg for all of 4 weeks.

I really feel the sense of community here, I bought my '75 MSA S10 from a forum member (on Ebay) from Trenton, GA. (I love the guitar, Brian), I also own the NV112 previously owned by the late Stan Remick who resided here in the greater Seattle area.

I hearby promise not to ask a question here without first performing a thorough search on the subject, nor step on toes. I'm the humble sort. Much to my wife and kids dismay, I'm also totally obsessed with everything steel! When does that subside?

Welcome Brian, this is a great forum, and anytime you need help all you have to do is ask. I too am a beginner with a long way to go. For me learning to play the pedal steel guitar has not been easy but it's something that I really want to do so I just have to keeep practicing.

Take care.

Brian, Welcome aboard the Steel Guitar Forum. When you sit down behind the steel, you'll be amazed! I'm a steel guitarist with cerebral palsy in my left hand, but it hasn't stopped me from playing steel. The best thing I know of as far as how to learn songs on steel is to listen to different country records and listen to the steel parts very close and then see if you can play the same parts on your steel that the steel on the records is playing . Thanks Everyone!

Papa Joe, you're so right. Hearing and hitting "that one transition" or stumbling onto "that one thing I heard" is very exciting and keeps me coming back.

Brett, I have been doing just that, listening to pieces of great players and playing (stumbling?)along with my ipod.

My short term goal is to get to a level of ability that I can jot down the chords to a piece and tag along with a band. I think this is realistic. (I have plenty of musician friends that would be tickled pink and somewhat forgiving of my inexperience just to be able to play with a pedal steel). The trick is to develop good enough technique along the way so as to not have bad habits that will hinder me as my profiecency and undertanding of the instrument increase. In short, I need to start looking in earnest for a good instructor here in Seattle. So far no luck.

Time to get the kiddies up!

Brian

Once hooked to the steel guitar obsession, it never stops. I will be 85 on Dec 10, got started in 1935 and still love it....al

Welcome Brian, sounds like you have a good philosophy to it and a very acheivable short term goal. A little bit of practice every day is the trick.

I am well into my second year of learning and the obsession grows if anything. I've got a very similar guitar to you, a '74 Classic, a great instrument to learn on.
