I think all of us have a song or songs that, when we hear them, take us back to a special time, place or event.
My mother in law came to town yesterday to spend a few weeks with us..she was married to a great guy who died a couple of years ago. Later in the afternoon we went to the music room at her request to hear some steel. Now I have been at this for coming up on a year, everything I've learned has been from Jeff Newman and Herb Steiner, both have great materials for those of us unfortunate enough to need them.
So I played a few songs for her, then she tells me "let me know when you learn Harbor Lights". I said I know it! (compliments of Herb) She has never once mentioned this song until yesterday. So I put the backing track in the CD and as I play I can see her eyes tearing up as the emotions hit her. Harbor Lights was one of their favorite songs, I didn't realize the significance of that song to them and to the sailors during the WWII era. When he had orders to go overseas, he would come home and drop a small piece of paper on the table, all it had written on it was 'Harbor Lights'. She knew he was leaving soon. She said they played this song as the ships departed and played it on their return. It was truly one of their 'special songs'.
In 1953 he was overseas and was due to return in just a few days, she had Harbor Lights playing on the record player as he returned early and surprised her. As Borat would say, they had their "sexy time" as Harbor Lights played. 9 months later my wife was born, conceived to the ambience of that song.
This was news to both of us. My wife likes that song and has asked me to play it a few times, now the song has so much more meaning to her..her dad was her best friend. I just thought it was so cool, seeing the emotions and memories that a song can create. I know the band will add this song and look forward to playing it for real. Just a really cool experience I thought I would share. |

Hi Ward,
I always love it when my music makes folks happy, cheerful, dancing, having fun, etc.
But when you can touch someones soul, it just don't get any better!
I've had the pleasure and honor of experiencing this a time or two. Sometimes it's a gospel song or hymn, sometimes not,
but ALWAYS special.
