Another smashingly successful steel weekend in Winnipeg. We heard from world-class pedal ace Al Brisco & several SGF posters from the pedal side (Don Walters, Dean Neely, George Mcllelan) plus a guy named Bill Simmons from Dallas with the buttery'est tone I've ever heard in my life.
But the highlight of the show for me, was hearing REALLY GOOD non-peddlers like the 'king of swing' Billy Jones from Medicine Hat, Ray Elgert from Edmonton & Joe Delaronde from Selkirk Mb who played his beaver log steel. Those guys are my heroes & its a thrill to sit next to them & drink in their styles. Thanks to Wayne & Joan Link for putting this show on & for letting me play some rock n'roll! |

Sorry for shamelessly bragging about our show, but I just have to point out that its quite rare to have a steel show with so many GOOD non-pedalers (the other guys, not me). I'm still enjoying the afterglow!
Billy Jones' set alone was worth the price of admission. Billy played some Ellington/Strayhorn standards & closed with 'Night Train'. Billy built his own 10-string steel & builds his own amps too.
Joe Delaronde from Selkirk Manitoba played swing & pop standards on his own handiwork- the renowned 'Beaver Log' steel.
Ray Elgert from Edmonton Alberta played blues & swing on his National Dynamic including one of my personal favourites the old Delmore Bro's classic "Blues Stay Away From Me". Ray usually sings, but he didn't this year...
So when I got up with my trio to do some country-rock, we re-did 'Blues Stay Away' with vocals and the oft-covered Roy Orbison song 'Blue Bayou'. I was very nervous playing in front of 50 guys who all play better than me & my hands were shaking like leaves!  |

Welcome to the "shakes club".
My cousin called from Gillam (way up north)this evening to find out where you were from. They enjoyed your set very much, and hope your trio will be back next year.
The place was smoking........after Brisco and Brian Sklar played all that Texas Swing.
Billy Simmons. What a wonderfull sound.Man he's smooth....
And of course Rust & Art Alyea of the Kentucky Hurricane and all the other singers and musicians which helped compliment the steel guitars.
Already looking forward to next and a another packed house.
