If you know Hank DeVito, please keep this a secret.

I'm looking for the current owner of his classic 1970's wood Emmons double-neck steel, used on many early Emmylou tracks. The steel has wooden inlay and a Texas star on the right side of the front face. On the player's side there is a decal of Nudie the Rodeo Tailor. You can catch a glimpse or two of this instrument near the end of this video:

If you or someone you know owns it, please send me a message. Don't worry, you're not in trouble!

And remember friends of DeVito, mum's the word.

thanks,

Steve Fishell

Good luck Steve. That is a special guitar for sure. Thanks for the link. Emmy Lou... One of the best and prettiest ladies to ever sing a country song.

Thank you Robert and Richard. The photos really help.

This steel was last seen in Southern California in the late 80's. Hank sold it to me around 1986 then I sold it a couple of years later to someone in LA whose name I don't recall. It has a beautiful tone and of course, I should have never let it go (anyone else have a similar story?). Very Happy

A helpful clue: Hank had changed the C6th neck to E9th, but had it set up to be tuned down one octave lower. The outside neck was in standard E9th.

By the way, Hank is in excellent health and is living in the Nashville area. When the time is right, I will reveal to the Forum the reason for all this secrecy. To do so now would be a breach of confidence.

I don't believe Hank lurks here often (if you do Hank, please leave the building) so hopefully he won't find out about this quest. Please don't tell him about it if you know him, and I'll keep you posted on developments.

thanks again,

Steve

Intriguing, Steve! I'm sure there are many who will await developments with great interest....

Those of us who were drawn into country music because of Emmylou and the Hot Band - and into steel guitar in particular - will, I'm sure, have very happy memories of this band and their excellent work.

For us who were in the UK, it was our first-ever sighting of James Burton! He was a legend to us. Albert, of course, was a very worthy replacement. Hank set the bar for me - I soon found out how difficult it was to emulate his playing!

And, talking of worthy replacements, then there was you!

Hi Fish! Dave Bromberg told me he sold his Emmons D10 to Hank. Same one?

Hi Skip and Roger: it's great to hear from you two wise coastal dwellers (California and Florida respectively). Thanks for sending me "good luck" in this crazy pursuit. Roger, Tracy and I fondly remember the "Great Con" Tour across Europe with you in 1987...."so, what time does the train leave for Zurich....5am ?!?!" Hope all is well with both you guys.

Hey Bo: I believe Jack is correct...the steel Hank bought from Mr. Bromberg was probably the black mica. The one I'm looking for has wooden necks and a killer tone (I sure hope it has the original pickups).

Thanks for your help everybody. It would really be a great Forum story if I could re-connect with this particular pedal steel again.

Steve, I played that guitar at the Swallows over twenty years ago. Some guy brought it in and asked me if I would play it. He told me he had bought the guitar from you. The pedal, and knee lever action was poor, but the tone was great! Best of luck with your search.

Steve, This does not have anything to do with a certain "Band" that is getting back together is it?

Oops, they became a little bit large.

This one's from the original Hot Band:

And this is from the Hot Band Reunion, feat. Steve Fishell:
