For all those who complain about not enough traditional or classic steel licks will be pleased with this new CD. Lots of great tones coming out of Paul's guitar, a healthy combination of old with new stylings. Some of my favorite tracks right now are Wrapped, It Just Comes Natural, What Say, all which have heavy steel work in them. Thanks PF for the sweet tones.

Bought it last night, based on other recent threads here, by sister Theresa and others. Just playing it for the first time today... only on track 10 or 15 at the moment. I'm also hearing plenty of the usual well written lyrics we've come to expect on GS CDs.
I'll let 'er cook for a few days and be back to chime in on this one.

Right!
I like "Texas Cookin'"with its "unending"
ending with Paul Franklin's improvisation
on C6 (or E9 because sometimes it's very
hard to tell which neck he's on!!!) |

After spinning it several times through I have to tell you that it leaves me wanting. As I mentioned, several of the songs are well written and enjoyable, lyrically. But I don’t think there is a 4-bar steel solo to be had in the 15 tracks. There is one steel intro, albeit a very brief one on “She Told Me So”, and 3 or 4 other intros where the steel is merely present.
In contrast, I popped in Gene Watson’s “Then and Now” CD and right out of the box I get fiddle and steel up in the mix.
I have several George Strait CDs but mostly from 5 years or more back. This one strikes me as the bland conformity we’ve come to expect from Nashville, although not from George Strait. It’s not at all fulfilling for me. I’m going to stick with those other Texas boys – guys like Dale Watson, Gene Watson, Jake Hooker and Justin Trevino.
I long for the time when you could hear that steel and know what song, or at least what singer was coming at you. A couple of examples are Hag’s “Big City” or Connie Smith’s “Once A Day”.

The organ in "She Told Me So" is totally out of place, and they didn't give PF a steel break. Coulda done it better... |

I buy a lot of CD's and I also bought this one. After playing through it twice I have to say that it is extremely over compressed with a lot of cymbal hash noise and strings playing over top of the steel. The lyrics are pretty mindless. Obviously this is no reflection on the musicians who are top notch and have no say in the mix. I rate CD overall, a "2" compared to some of George Strait's earlier stuff.

Steel is very prominent on this cd, like always! George is true to traditional country and to steel & fiddle.
Poor George can't please everyone! |

T,
Grab your copy of Rodney Crowell's "Diamonds & Dirt" CD. Give that one a spin and then see if you don't agree that the steel on George's latest is far from prominent.
I know I set the bar pretty high with that CD for comparison... as well as the Gene Watson CD (another family connection with that one). Heck! Just grab any George Strait CD from 5 years or more ago.

Ron,
We agree on "Diamond's & Dirt"! That material and musicanship was choice.
We'll always compare past to present. Hey, I'm happy George is still being heard on the radio and has had 50 or so #1's!
Ya can't say that about many artist today or past artist.
I recommend this cd for Strait and steel lovers!
