I've been listening to John Prine a lot lately. Any one know who plays steel for him?

No one on a regular basis lately. He plays live with guitar and bass. The late Leo LeBlanc was with him from the first album pretty much exclusively for a couple of decades. (Leo's son is a frequent contributor here on the Forum and may be able to address this more precisely.) Jerry Douglas played Weissenborn on "My Lovely Home Town" on "Fair and Square," but beyond that, I don't recall who if anyone might have been playing steel on those Grammy-winning yet overproduced CDs of the nineties. |

I think Mike Cass played on the John Prine Christmas Album, or at least on "Christmas in Prison." |

Too weird!!! I was just listening to John Prine's "Lets Talk Dirty in Hawaiian" this morning.
Lloyd sent me this info today:
quote: "Actually, I played on his cult classic, "Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian" sometime in the 1970s or ' 80s. Just last week I recorded his newest album, in it's entirety for Oh Boy Records, a wonderful compilation of old Country standards. The best part is that it is a duet album with Mac Wiseman where they sing alternate parts, and occasionally together. But they're both always on each song.
There's lots of steel on this one and the project includes the great Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Kenny Malone, drums, Charles Cochran, keyboards and a cast of "several others".
They sung beautifully together, with a sound that only comes with age and maturity."

"The Great Compromise" from the "Diamond In The Rough" album is one of my fav's although there is no steel on it still, a nicely worded song. Cant wait to hear John and Mac Wiseman together. Interesting pairing. With the line up of backing musicians, I am sure it will be a goodun'. |

Wow! A new album with country standarts by one of my favourite musicians ever! Does anyone know when it's supposed to hit the shelves?
