The above link is to a Hawkshaw Hawkins video. It shows Jackie Phelps on guitar but never shows the steel player. Any chance that anyone knows who it is?

Probably Bob Foster, he can be seen on steel on a couple of other Hawk tunes from the same show.

The late Claude Brownell played with him for a while. That's the extent of what I know--no dates, etc.

I had the honor of working with Hawk for a while in 1953.Korea was just trying to finish up(never did). I went into the Army and when I got out a few years later, I never saw Hawk again. I do however, visit his gravesite here in Goodlettsville along with so many other of our wonderful late stars. Hawk was sure a gentle giant and I appreciate the chance to work with that great"KING" Record artist. Thanks, Ron

Ben,

I cut some King Record sessions with him, but I never played a live gig with him. Bob Foster is as good a guess as any for the video stuff.

Thanks guys. I am sorry I never got to see Hawkshaw in person. I remember when he was at the Wheeling Jamboree way back when, but I never had the chance to go see him (too young to drive).

I would like to have some of his King sessions stuff. Hopefully there a cd or two of it around. By the time he got to RCA, the "Nashville Sound" had set in and it was not my kind of country....except for "I don't Apoligize".

When Hawkshaw was still at the Wheeling, WV. station, I saw him at the Virginia theater. His steel player was Jiggs Lemley, Who resides in FLa. these days.

JERRY BYRD can be heard on a number of Hawk's olde KING records....... If I recall accurately, he did about 12 discs with him.
Some really great steel gutiar work, I might ad.

AMEN BROTHER

I have to agree that it might've been my old, dear, late friend,Bob Foster, since he did a LOT of recording work w/ Hawkshaw,Jean Shepard,AND (believe it or not) Carl Smith, unbeknownst to almost everyone.

Bob was one of the "A-Team" session men back then, until Bud Isaacs introduced pedals. Bob's session career, pretty much, came to a halt, since he didn't adapt to the "pedal scene".

Back in the early 70's,Bob,& his son, opened a tee shirt printing shop on lower Broadway, called "Nashville Tops". With the advent of "urban renewal" the landlord of the building decided to raise the rent. Bob could no longer afford it,so they closed.

Eventually, both Bob & his son, passed away, virtually totally unrecognized. This is why,for his contribution to the steel guitar world,I think Bob Foster should be,posthumously, inducted into the SGHOF! Agreed??

I have downloaded the video and have played it so many times. As Jackie finishes his break he looks left and appears to mouth the word "Bob".

Thanks to all for all of your input.

If you're talking about the video that was linked on E-tube, recently, if you look closely, you'll see Chet Atkins behind Jackie.
