This label put out a bunch of great hillbilly music in the 40s and 50s and Merle Travis played with a lot of different artists on the label. There is also some great steel playing and I was wondering if anyone knew if they had a house guy for that.

The bands that recorded for King in that era (Moon Mullican, Hank Penny, Luke Wills, Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, etc) tended to use their own steel player, rather than a staff musician. Jerry Byrd was a local player during some of that time period and may have been the closest to a house player.

John,
I played sessions with Moon, Hawkshaw, Copas, Redd Stewart, and scores of others from about 1948 until about 1952. I usually did one or two double sessions each week. The sessions usually ran from 1:00 A.M. until after daybreak because a lot of the regular players were playing night gigs. They also used some of the guys from the Cinncinnatti Philharmonic. (A single session paid $41.25 in those days. That's how I got to be so rich!!!!!)

I don't know how long your sessions were in those days but by todays standards that's pretty good money. $42.25 for a three hour session was really good back then and if you played a couple of double sessions a week you were doing great.

Hope this is not a hijack, Roy, what brand guitar did you play on those sessions. Great sound.

Frank, the sessions were 4 hours. Later, the rate went to $52.50 for 3 hours.

Howard, Thanks for the compliment. I had a National double neck until December 1949, at which time I signed an endorsement contract with Leo Fender and he gave me a triple 8 and a Pro amp as part of the endorsement deal. I can't recall which axe I played on whose sessions. Everything recorded in the 50's was on the Fender.
