I quit drinking on 6Aug80. I went to AA meetings twice or more a day for probably 10 years. It definitely saved my life. I was allowed thereby to play music in bars from the beginning of my sobriety. YMMV. Nobody told me I had to go, and I don't envy those that have been forced to go.
In the last 10 yrs or so I haven't been to a meeting, nor have I paid much attention to the whole deal. I don't have to. I haven't felt like drinking alcohol in 26 years this August 6th, and I haven't. I don't even remember what it felt like.
The important thing I came to realise was that there are plenty of people that can drink alcohol, and that I am not one of them.
Kind of like a diabetic that gives up trying to eat sugar after a few comas..
Lots of funny stories and interesting anecdotes I suppose.
Among other things It has allowed me to become for better or worse, a Pedal Steel Guitar Player that has worked constantly with varying degrees of satisfaction. In the low few thousands of bar gigs.

I never was what would be classified as alcoholic, but; in LA during 1970, I was drinking at least a 6-Pak a day of Colt~45 Malt Liquor, while waiting for my wife to arrive. When my wife arrived from Korea in June of ’70, she informed me that the smell of beer or alcohol on my breath was, to say the least; not too pleasing. So, being a newly~wed and aiming to please, (back then) I immediately stopped drinking in that fashion and today after more than 36-yrs. just (2)-beers would give me an unbareable headache. Today, my alcohol consumption is practically non-existent and almost ‘never’ beer! On my first 3-week job out of Nashville in ’67, we worked sets of 30-min ON & 30-min OFF, but. the beer threw my schedule ‘way off’! I just couldn't get it straight!

Looking back, I found it relatively easy to quit. The doctor told me it was suicidal, due to the condition of my liver. I came home, and two bottles of beer sat in the fridge for six months before a guest drank them. I gave away my wine rack and its contents.
I think that I'm not an alcoholic. I wouldn't have been able to kick it so easily if I was. 30 years of daily use, and I just stopped. I understand that an alcoholic can't quit so casually.
I salute those of you who found the inner will and strength to kick physical addiction. Congratulations, Friends of Bill W. You are all heroes in my book.

I'd like to echo the good thoughts of the other posters before me I'm very proud of anyone that has licked their problems! Keep up the good work. I have my own demons but it's not Booze it's food and right now I'm winning the battle about 150 pounds over a 4 year period. I started out at over 535 and now am down to around 350 to 375. Food for me is no different than booze or drugs to others.
