I'm seeing TONS of posts of YouTube stuff, on several forums. Almost like going to a buddy's housewho's always got a new album for you to hear, or (worse) a co-worker with family snapshots for everyone. I enjoy some of the YouTube stuff, but not a barrage of it.
What do y'all think? |

personally speaking I love it. Where else can you find old video of country music to see? I keep hoping and waiting to see if someone can find some footage of my dad playing with Jim Reeves or Hank.

I agree with both of you. There is an unbelievable amount of bandwidth wasted on worthless crappy home movie stuff or kids fooling around with the digital camera.
On the other hand I've been delighted to find some fantastic footage of my favorite old country performers such as Speedy West, Ray Price, Faron Young, etc. |

I love the cool stuff on youtube, but I agree, there's a lot of useless stuff. In terms of youtube itself, one must take the bad with the good - overall I think it's a great resource, and not too hard to filter out the junk using their search function. Youtube has a good search function - if you type ray price in the search textfield, it returns a bunch of cool old Ray Price videos. Or danny gatton, buck owens, pedal steel, steel guitar, whatever. A little time spent searching yields much more than any links that have been posted.
Insofar as youtube posts on our forum, there was a post suggesting a separate section for youtube posts. b0b pointed out that "Steel on the Web" was an appropriate spot for that, but most people didn't seem to be using it for that. That would at least put it in one place.
Perhaps part of the difficulty with that section for this is that some of these youtube videos are not about steel guitar - people post links to guitar players, singers, you name it. Not really appropriate to post these to "Steel on the Web".
Another issue is that some of the youtube links are commentaries on the current state of music - "Hey, look at that awful thing on youtube.", or "Hey, look at that wonderful thing on youtube.", and then people comment on some aspect of it, opening it up for discussion. It has added to the clutter a bit - sometimes, people open up new threads on the same video a month or more later, and I'm not sure why I care about some 11 year old Streisland wannabee. But overall, it's a great resource. |

I have noticed that a lot of members were suspended recently (their names or usernames don't show up anymore, also a lot of clips have disappeared). Looks like they are really enforcing the issue with the copyrighted material now - unfortunately a major part of the interesting stuff are (were) the old TV shows and videos, if that is gone, that doesn't leave a lot to be looking for. Yes, there are a few legal copyrighted clips (Al Brisco, for example), but a lot of the filmed clips are not worth the effort. 16 seconds filmed with a handheld camera from row 26 isn't really very interesting.
The other homemade videos, well...I want to be polite and not comment... 
On the other hand, it was just a matter of time until the copyright owners would be alerted, seeing their own material added for public free viewing (and downloading!!!). I bhave several new or fairly new DVDs in my collection that already can be seen on YouTube as well.
We'll see what the future brings, but maybe YouTube's golden days are already over, same thing that happened with the free download sites.

They will win that lawsuit 'cause they are not the ones responsable for what people put on there.Youtube provides people with the bandwith.You as a YouTube customer have to sign regulations on that web-site before you post something.By doing that YouTube holds you responsable for all the actions taken.
Example....Kazaa one of the biggest peer to peer servers can not be held responsable for people actions.There are many recordlabels,governements that lost the lawsuits against Sherman Networks.Simply because they cannot be held responsble.
I have to agree with all of the above here that YouTube share's a lot of junk to.
But it's a very easy way for people to show themselfs on the internet.
People like that make YouTube big.

Awhile back there were some GREAT Emmy Lou Harris clips that appeared to be put on there by her son...I booked marked them,
went back to them later and they had been taken off...you'd think that her son probably did it without MOM's permission or her management found out about it and had it done.
Too bad, it brought her back to my attention and probably would have resulted in me buying CD's of some of her older albums...she's hardly a household name today...seems to me that's a short sided view of things on thier part. [This message was edited by Jack Francis on 22 July 2006 at 06:29 PM.] |
