While visiting in the Richmond, VA, area, I took the opportunity to book a two hour session with Buddy at Billy and Wanda Cooper's Store. If you're in the area, take advantage of this opportunity. I think I had my money's worth in the first 15 minutes. Buddy evaluated my hand and arm position and made some suggestions and then proceeded to show me plenty of valuable stuff that should keep me busy until I can get back for another go 'round. The anecdotes alone are worth the trip. Buddy is really personable ... you'll have a great time. |

Steve,
Would it be out of line to ask how much BC charges? Just curious.

I sat across from Buddy many an hour studying, talking, and laughing. It wasn't until recently, when I bought the Ernest Tubb Box Set "Another Story" and heard some of the finest steel playing in the world that I realized what a cornerstone Buddy Charlton was to Ernest's music. He carried a hugh part of that band. The lessons, you'll never regret spending anything for that experience. [This message was edited by Dave Diehl on 24 June 2006 at 05:10 PM.] |

Well Gary when I took lessons from him for a couple years I think it was 20$ an hour.
That was THIRTY years ago.
I imagine adjusted for inflation it's probably in the thousands.
Best money I ever spent. It returned itself a hundred times.
The last part's serious.
His "kindly worried look" is priceless.

Thank you Alexander for that interview. I am a huge fan (like thousands more I'm sure) of Buddy Charlton. I imagine that there is a lot more history that Buddy may share someday with a good journalist. I am real happy when I see him around Billy's Music Store and just exchange a couple of words with him; super guy. |

I imagine a lot of you long timers had the same experience as I did, tuning in to the Midnight Jamboree, expecting to hear Buddie Emmons. When Ernest said, " We have a new steel player", my heart sank. By the end of the broadcast, I'm thinking maybe this won't be so bad. After about three weeks, I was hooked. This Buddy Charlton guy was cutting out new territory. He played with "attitude"
and sassy, and the band continued to cook.
After he had done his time in that group,
Buddy would forever be identified as the
steel sound of the Texas Troubadours. Quite
an accomplishment, following Buddie Emmons
into a band!
into a situation! |
